Moore's Law seems to indicate that by 2027, computers will be capable of just as many operations as the human brain.
What if the Twilight War wasn't between two groups of humans/Nations but between humans and machines? As in the Terminator Movies, the machines take control of orbital space platforms and nuclear missile launch facilities and start World War III with the goal of exterminating mankind. Of course these machines are partly mad, they don't have much of a plan for what happens after the War, not do they take much into account that the war itself would destroy much of the infrastructure that they need to exist. It more of a matter of "garbage in, garbage out," the human programmers, many of whom worked for the military fed these rudimentaty AI alot of bad stuff, making them paranoid and causing them to start a war. The technology is otherwise the same.
