I'm going to fit the Dirty Pair...errr..put down the plasma weapons girls...ahem, The Lovely Angels in my next campaign somehow...

"It's Not Our Fault!"

Cowboy Bebop. Love the music. Faye Valentine is soooo gonna be a femme fatale in my next campaign. And Edward will be used to annoy the heck out of the players. ;)

Macross Plus

Though Mecha-SF, which I don't want to mix with Traveller, I like the figther-pilot-background. And intriguing story, also...

I too love the "Lovely Angels" as well as "Outlaw Star." I really was impressed when "Cowboy Bebop" was aired, it had the best feel of a long settled space, with dirty edges and mixed populations of immigrants and long time settlers.
In manga my all time favorite and inspiration for many adventures is "Appleseed" by Masume Shirow. I understand that an updated anime based on that story is being made or is made in Japan. I can't wait to see it. "The Wings of Honnamise" (sp?) is a great example of TL 5 spaceflight on a budget. The planet too busy with war to build a decent space program so all the rejects are in charge of basically hand building the Mercury/Redstone project by themselves.
And the granddaddy of them all "Star Blazers!"

Yeah, I like Cowboy Beebop too.
Fay Valentine and Julia definetly go in my campaign.

Outlaw Star is alright; very reminiscent of Traveller at times.

Never have seen Dirty Pair; have to put that on my stuff to see list.

I liked Gundam Wing. I didn't care much for the Gwing pilots themselves, though Duo Maxwell had his moments. The real fun ones were Colonel Zechs, Lt. Neun, Tres Kushrinada, etc. All the bad guys and anti heros. They make for great Traveller NPC's. Plus they got spinal mount type weapons eg things like the Noventa Energy Cannon.

Now, for the really old school...before Voltron...there was:
Battle of the Planets! [I think its called Gatcha Man in some quarters]
The ship in there always reminded me of the Aslan Scout ship silhouette in the Dark Nebula game. UNLIMITED MISSILE ROUNDS!!! And when they get into trouble, the ship turns into a firey phoenix. And the crew wears capes and motorcycle helmets. Saturn V missile complexes getting wasted by alien monsters. Gotta love it. :D

Hmmm... I seem to _really_ be a latecomer to this...

Nevertheless, I'd suggest the Battle Angel Alita manga series (having never seen the anime), then echo the praise for Crest of the Stars (which I think isn't quite the same thing as I heard it billed - I belong to a club, though, and they may take artistic license in the descriptions). Also, the Armitage III series is good, as is Akira.

Oh yeah, this is completely non-Traveller, but everyone should see the anime and read the manga of Azumanga Daioh. It's so captivatingly insanely cute!  (to self)

Two favorites of mine I have not seen listed:

Stellvia of the Universe > Linky <

and

Martian Successor Nadesico > Linky <

The former has gravity manouever drives, and the later features some tricky jump drives...and mecha for both.

[edit] I have heard that Angellinks gets 'better' as the series progresses, but after four episodes of needlessly big-eyed and bigger-boobed, biggest gunned teenyboppers...they lost me.

also Lost Universe should be mentioned. I have seen the 1st four ep.s, and these are soso, but better than AngelLinks imo: > Linky <

[Further Edit] Scrapped Princess might qualify too. > Linky < While it starts as per usual fantasy story, it gets increasingly sci-fi magic=uber-tech stuff.

It's funny but while I'm at least as big a fan of anime as I am of traveller. I've never really linked them. To me, It's like drizzling chocolate sauce on your 24 ounce prime rib.

For me Traveller had an 'Old School' Sci Fi feel. H B Piper, Jerry Pournelle, Spaceships as Steam age Freighters and naval vessels and the Imperium not unlike a romantised victorian british empire.

Anime, on the other hand, Conquers totally different territory. The tech is sometimes hard to believe but the ship designs and robots are so cool and downright pretty. While Traveller tends to be filled (The way I've always envisioned/played it) With pragmatic, rational (mostly) heroes and villians that wouldn't have been out of place in a 50's mainstream film with film noire pretensions. Anime Characters are nothing if not colourful. They're extremist of every sort and of every philosphical persuasion. They are fascinating but, to me, not traveller.

Having Said that:

Cowboy Bebop definately get's my vote as being rather travelleresque. The settings not quite right but the crew of the bebop COULD be your typical Traveller party of adventurers.

Gundam Wing left me cold, The Gundam boys push the 'I am the mission' warrior envelope to the point where they cease to be entertaining (for me) to watch. I have to admit that the 5th business characters (mostly ladies) were worth a second look though.Lt. Lucrezia Noin, Major Sally Po, And the Ruthless Lady Une (before she proved to have some odd bi-polar multiple personality thing going on, triggered aparantly by her choice in eyewhere, but I digress) were all well... interesting. And possibly good templates for some Traveller NPC's of military bent.

And while I can think of a number of Anime which have tangential contact with MTU or the OTU, (ones mentioned in fact: Sol Bianca was VERY cool and come to think of it. Kinda travellerish depending on the episode, and the planet being visited. I Love/collect the Alita Manga licensed by Viz but don't get a traveller feel from it most of the time. )

I can't say Anime and Traveller (to me anyway) really mix.

And that's not to knock either.
I'm here so that indicates my feelings for traveller and as for anime. My list of favourites is long, ongoing, and constantly shifting with what I've watched new or what I've rediscovered old.

Among the New, Check out 'Full Metal Panic' sheer fun.

Among the old(er) Noire. Modern day but perhaps more travelleresque for all that because there Aren't any giant Longbow weilding spaceships.

Mmmmm, chocolate steak. I take it you are not fmiliar with the Mexican sauce mole' (that's mo-lay)? It is a sauce with chiles and chocolate... very tasty.

More to the point, what little anime I have seen has been more suitable to a D&D game than a Traveller game, with a few exeptions. Cowboy Bebop has been mentioned repeatedly, so I don't need to. Even though I have not seen any of the giant robot type anime, that is exactly what I intend to do once I get around to running a T20 game.

Picture a quiet little backwater planet with a mecha defence force when the B. E. M. invade. (Actually, the invaders will be the bugs from R. A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers)

Slayers is the first D&D style anime that pops into my mind. The funny thing is that Linna Inverses additude on money would fit into Traveller very well (There is this pirate/bounty hunter ship see captained by this short, petite figures young lady. BTW NEVER adversly comment on her figure.

Another that could work is Gunsmith Cats for the boutny hunter angle again, and for honorable, but illegal merchants/smugglers "Ridding Bean"

I just have to ask. Are you going to work in my two favorate lines from that book? In other words:

"I am a 30 second bomb, I am a 30 second bomb. 29 .... 28....."

and

"Bugs Mr Rico, I'm burning them!!"

How about The Five Star Stories by Mamoru Nagano?... talk about epic - the scope of his series makes Dune look provincial! And some superb concepts - exploring the morality of bioengineering and prophecy. Not to mention the funkiest costume, character and mecha designs ever!

Ah! Another Five Star Stories fann!

However, I don't really believe the mechas designs can be called funky. They are, rather, among the best mecha designs of any kind, ever. Models of his mecha can stand up, balanced, even when carrying large cannons. Their designs, from a physical mobility standpoint, actually do work (although the powersystems are a complete handwave), instead of just appearing to work.
