Traveller in other cultures

We have seen strong contributions in Traveller from Yanks, Brits and Germans in defining the OTU? How have other cultures tried to impact the Traveller Universe, share your insights with us?

For instance, I could envision a Finn might look at the Marches as one big Finland versus a Consulate. Now, the process of Finlandization would not be an one way process, there is certainly enough evidence that the Finns were able to carve out the special relationship with the USSR. Similarly, governments in the Marches may have tried the quiet diplomacy with the Consulate -what were the results?

I know that a Japanese fellow asked permission to port my Modular Starport Catalog into Japanese... but that's all I know.

As a pure blooded Zhodani, let me try to find a period in the solomani history that is similar to the conflict between the evil imperium and the glorious Zhodani.

Lets look at Skaneland, during the Northern Seven Years' War.

Skaneland would then be the Marches, that is separated by a rift (water) from the rest of Denmark. Clearly the Swedes will think that Skaneland should belong to them. Just like in the Marches, a number of war was fought over this issue. Check out the history for Skaneland, by clicking on its link.

Finally, just like the Zhodani have done in the Marches with planets that have been liberated (like Cipango), the swedes "forcefully demanded Skaneland adopt Swedish customs and laws" after it became swedish.

I hope this alternative historical description will provide some help as compared with the usual Persian-Greek or American-Soviet analogies.

Hehehe.

References to the conflicts after the dissolution of the Kalmar Union. Oh how I miss my games of Europa Universalis II. =)

With the assumptions above;
</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">Denmark = the evil imperium
Sweden = the glorious Zhodani
Poland = the Vargr
Germany = the Aslan with its many clans.
England = the K'kree
Netherlands = the Hivers </pre>[/QUOTE]Does this make sense?

Then Slesvig would be the Solomani.

BeRKA !
Fantastic analysation. Now something getting clearer:

- Denmark provides a striking set of sex shops just at the border, perhaps to distract upright Slesvig people from the path of moral.
- Sveden-Zhodani get many of their special psionic abilities by drinking more alcoholics than the others (especially Xmas-Beer)
- Poland-Vargr, still a perfect place for new western cars to disappear forever...
- Germany-Aslan, the real reason why they created such a strange looking soccer world championship being like GOLEO (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/de/e/mascot.html)
- England/K'Kree, the home of conservative habits, need for land, strange food and origin of BSE
- Netherlands/Hivers, they cannot play soccer, live in crowded places and speak a funny language. But they surely have a plan...

(Dont take it too serious

One more thing just struck me. At this time, Norway was a part of Denmark. In Norway, they eat Lutefisk so Norway must be the Vland sector (the home of the Vilani).

Greetings and salutations,

Berka, this is how it actually breaks down.

Japan = Aslan
Soviet Union = Vargr
Australia = Zhodani (don't mess with us, we won't mess with you)
Mexico = Hivers (No one knows what they're doing, but they have a plan)
England = K'kree
America = Imperium (forcing itself upon everyone else)

To get back to the Baltic Sea around the year 1570 idea, the Darrians could be Gotland. There looks like there could be some historical parallels here as well. The Gotland Capital was destroyed, and they have had a glorious past, and now (1570) they are allied with Denmark.

The Sword Worlds could be Öland.

I cannot get this idea out of my head. It just seems to get better the more I think about it.

Another good thing is that it resembles "proto-traveller" a bit since the danish capital is located near the "rift".

Let call this milieu DK1570! :cool:

As we can see in the wikipedia, the Hanseatic League was in its "downfall" state in the 1570s. But this is not a bad thing for the DK1570 setting. The League is still around, and tries to defend its position. This could provide many adventure hooks.

In the DK1570 setting, the League might be called "the Pan Galactic Trading Guild". (Can anyone come up with have a better name?) They would have big and armed trading ships, that in some cases can be a few 100s years old. They would only be carrying cargo. They would have bases on some 50 worlds. Mostly in Imperial, Solomani, Vargr, Aslan and Hiver Space. Their employees (on both ships and on their bases) would be from all of these races, and also some other races (like the Bwaps) as well. This would mean that it is likely to meet anyone of these races far from their home worlds, which will also make the game more enjoyable.

Discussion continues in the DK1570 thread.

Wow! This is starting to coalesc into an alternate Traveller Setting.

I like the idea of the U.S. as the Imperium. But in 1570 there was no U.S. There was a Mexico however, but it was very different from the one we know today. The Holy Roman Empire Circa 1570 might be close to the 3rd Imperium.

The something-somethings.

Ah! The Hanseatic League. Not a game setting. Well, definitely a game setting, but primarily historical.
