The Droyne

How do you portray the Droyne in your Traveller Universe?

According to Library Data they have had access to to Jump Drive almost as long as the Vilani.

They are spread across Charted Space.

Some of them have it and use it, some don't. My take is that the various Droyne worlds each do their own thing, but what that might be is very rarely obvious to outsiders.

Some seek out Chirper worlds to return them to being Droyne.
Some trade according to inexplicable patterns for, or with, items and materials that don't make a lot of sense.
Very few are actively hostile to their neighbors. When they are there is always a reason behind it other than simple imperialism.
Even the most studied and accomplished Droyne comedians have deadpan deliveries.

Yes--the Droyne are a very static culture, seemingly unchanging for myriads of years (literally!)--but simultaneously, each community has its own particular flavor or bent.

And the motivations for that way of being are never apparent, never obvious to the casual student, or even the serious student. Very enigmatic, these communeists.

The Droyne are very, very hard to find. Unless they want to be found.

If you find them, Droyne are very, very hard to see. Unless they want to be seen.

If you see them, Droyne are very, very hard to catch. Unless they want to be caught.

If you catch them, Droyne are very, very hard to understand.

Unless Droyne want to be understood.

Droyne are terrifically alien.

Thanks for reading.

I'm sensing a pattern here . . . :devil::rofl:

They've had Jump Drive longer than the Vilani, actually. But they just aren't interested in interstellar colonization...these days. Apparently they were in the distant past, though they were apparently very selective about what worlds they colonized. As a result, there are effectively a bunch of one-world Droyne polities, some of which have been absorbed into larger polities that subsequently grew around them (such as the Third Imperium).

Or so goes the best scholarship in the modern day, which does not know the whole truth about Grandfather and the Final War.

That said, as with just about any major or minor race in contact with interstellar society, there are always a few exceptions who will go travelling about. With Droyne these are most often the Sport caste, but others do sometimes travel too, especially if they "adopt" a "family" (crew) of travellers to be part of.

In the New New Era Books (IY 1248), there is a Droyne population explosion in the area of the Reformation Coalition after the last major incursion of the Vampire Ships in 1210. The ships kill a everyone on Droyne World. Survivors fled to other worlds in all different directions. Later, when the Coalition becomes The Freedom League, there are worlds with primarily Droyne population represented in the League government. I'm guessing they found safety in numbers, sticking it out with the humans instead of alone.

My take on the Droyne.

They are an augmented race.

True 'droyne' are the Chirpers.

But:
Spoiler:
Grandfather bioengineered and psionically engineered Chirpers into Droyne.
The casting ceremony activates latent bio/psionic augmentation and transforms a Chirper into the Droyne caste the ceremony dictates.
The leader of this ceremony can influence the results.
Grandfather transformed this ceremony into an almost religeous casting ceremony when he introduce the Coyns in order to allow Chirper populations that had survived the Ancients war to become Droyne.
Droyne have other casting ceremonies that allow them access to ancestral memories - this may actually be a database hidden in jump/psionic dimensions.
They also have makers hidden in these other dimensions

Grandfather as a singular hyper-Droyne doesn't quite fit with me. It breaks the whole Droyne species way. Droyne have castes, and the castes are all needed to be together to survive.

Suddenly along one comes who is self-sufficient, and combines all the castes? Nope. It's just not how they roll.

I'd rather see three new "high" castes, one per gender: Male = prince, maybe with qualities of Leader + Sport + Warrior, Female = judge, like a drone but with certain leader qualities, and Enabler = Rememberer (say that three times fast!) who is a technician plus lore-holder. Together, the three would form a leadership tyaflem (or maybe with other "normal" Droyne of the six castes?) to direct and order their oytrips, as a sort of genius. The tyaflem might specialize in a given area of thought and technology.
