the Cryogenic Superfluid Thermodynamic Munchkin

stealth

SOC-12
It's a dark and dangerous ruined hulk, and who knows how long it's been floating here in the space between stars. Even the insurance companies don't. But thanks to that insane guy and his map, you have found the cursed remains of the Mary Celeste II, in complete innocence.

I don't hate my players, I love them. The Munchkin is a cryogenic lifeform. It resembles a black tarry fluid that is lighter than air, which moves by extrusion, and by evaporation and condensation.

It's body consists mostly of oxalic acid, a substance so reactive it exists only in theory. It's standard attack form is to coat the target and dissolve it. And it can boil away in seconds to become a cloud of oxalic acid vapor. It can also create a very hard bar of superconducting crystal which it uses to snare a target, much like a chameleon snares an insect with it's tongue.

The Munchkin isn't really alive, it's just a big ongoing cryogenic chemical reaction, with no DNA or anything, so psionics won't work at all.

It just flows naturally towards energy sources, sometimes freezing them or seeming to plan attacks, flowing back when burnt, finding the coldest places in the EM shadow. It might seem to extrude a rock-hard frozen spire in an instant, or a tendril of explosive frozen nitrous-oxide to explore. But what's really going on is a complex entropic reaction that is exploiting it's environment in the most efficient way possible.

Treat it like a slow burning anti-fire, prone to sudden bursts of violence.

I used one on my old group and had fun. When the players first noticed they had one on board, it was flowing cautiously into a corridor, and then seemed to notice the sensor.

Parts of it evaporated, and went to work.

They did the usual dumb things, like try to analyze samples, which only makes the horror worse. If you chop a crystal spire apart, the halves liquify and try to rejoin. Also, the Munchkin can become a Fermionic cloud, because it is that cold and evil. That's how you learn it can float right through all forms of matter which have an even atomic number, and their goes containment (when analyzing the Munchkin samples, you might note that all of the elements that make it up have odd atomic numbers).

It's not actually intelligent; it's kind of like trying to fight a capricous wild fire that drains and freezes things instead of burning them. Unless of coarse you give it some kind of utterly alien sapience. Or a lair. Or friends.

Congratulations! You have achieved a level of weird and evil I can only dream of attaining. In fact, I'm scared to go sleep ;)

Stealth,

That's one of the best and nastiest ideas I've ever come across in a Traveller fora.

Although it may be a bit of extra work, would you consider writing up a short description of your Cryogenic Superfluid Thermodynamic Munchkins? You could then upload that document to the File Library here and also submit it to Jeff Zeitlin's Freelance Traveller.

The idea is so good I'd hate to see it disappear among the many threads here.

Regards,
Bill

Containment

Why can't it be contained in Copper, Atomic # 29 Filled with DRANO it would neutralize acid? Sodium Hydroxide even better.

Does it attack humans as an energy source?

Oxalic acid is natural found in nuts, beets, buckwheat, rhubarb, chocolate and spinach. Mix rhubarb and milk and it will leave unpleasant crunchness in mouth as it dissolves enamel.

Oxalic Acid aerosol can be used as insecticide vs. mites.
