Attached is a conversion of Merchant Captain Alexander Lascelles Jamison from the Classic Traveller to Traveller5 chargen. It is draft status, and has little if any discussion on the choices made when porting this character over to T5.

Ah, there's a familiar name. :) The players book, when written, needs to have plenty of walkthrough examples. Every word of an example is worth 10 of dry description.

On first blush, I assume that those skills/knowledges listed without a number are level 1 ... and you haven't included any of the default level zero skills that haven't been raised?

Also, I'm guessing if he moved around a lot he wouldn't aquire any world knowledges. Fair enoungh. But what of his homeworld? If he is away so long that the penalty is greater than the knowledge in the first place does he loose that knowledge? I thought it would drop to zero and no further ... that's what it says on p144.

A couple of things:

1) I always loved the "interpret the rolls" part of Trav chargen, it helps flesh out their background and figure out who they are. Well done on that.

2) It's been a while, so I may be mistaken, but it seems like you took actual quotes out of the original's example, such as "Taking stock of himself and his personal qualities..." and the "fitness kick" and whatnot. If so, also cool.

3) 5th term, mustering out: You say that 7 ship shares earns him 70% control of a free trader, but according to p 108 of the rules, it gets him 7 x 25 tons = 175 tons, which is 175/200*100 = 87.5%. Or did I miss something somewhere?

Anyway, nice to see Cpt. Alex again, and thanks for the example.

You are sooooo right.

Yes and yes, but I do need to show all levels. (Should I include the zero-level default skills?)

You're right, he should have level Zero in "Dinomn" world knowledge.

I may be mistaken, but it seems like you took actual quotes out of the original's example, such as "Taking stock of himself and his personal qualities..." and the "fitness kick" and whatnot. If so, also cool.

Thanks! I re-used as much of the original text as I could. A lot of the color text came from the original.

3) 5th term, mustering out: You say that 7 ship shares earns him 70% control of a free trader, but according to p 108 of the rules, it gets him 7 x 25 tons = 175 tons, which is 175/200*100 = 87.5%. Or did I miss something somewhere?

Thanks for that. I think I ported Captain Jamison over from an earlier draft. At least, that's my excuse. I'll fix it.

Rob, Examples should leave NOTHING out, not one thing should be left to be assumed.

Where was the college located? not having said I would think he was on Dinom still. Is this technically Term 1? Errata says he should have gained +1 Edu as his Edu was already 8, from what I recall of CT/MT honors granted a further +1 Edu, has that changed?

T5 page 144: World Knowledge declines over time: reduce this value
-1 every Term (four years) once adventuring begins.

Should his skill be World (Dinom) 4? Or did he sneak in some adventuring? :)

Yes, logically he went off world and world knowledge grew stale, just pointing out the line in the book.

Roll of 2 on branch for soldier is infantry, where did crewman (Enlisted Spacer?) come from?

What was the missing year of Army (Soldier) service? I saw Battle, Siege, and Strike...

I'll take every example I can grab, still trying to absorb all this.

The way I had interpreted it, his World(Dinom) skill peaked at 5 (end of college at age 22) but then he went off world for several terms bringing it down to zero. I think that was the intent of the rule ... though a literal reading of p144 might suggest otherwise.

Should clarification be added to the eratta thread?

Thanks Rob

I have downloaded the PDF and will be using it when I get the book.

Cheers

[Referee] Hat Activated!

So, Rob, he has Animals-1 listed, but not the associated Knowledges. Which two does he have (Ride-1), (Trainer-1), or (Teamster-1), or is it one of the Knowledges at (Knowledge-2)?

Same question for Driver, Heavy Weapons, and Pilot, where are the Knowledges?

Also, I use the format Skill-X (Knowledge-Y) for things like Fighter, so his Fighter skill line would look like this: Fighter-1 (Blades-1, Slug Thrower-1), which I personally think is much easier to read and interpret. Same goes for Gunner and Engineer which would be Gunner-1 (Turrets-2) and Engineer-0 (Life Support-1).

Speaking of Gunner, you do realize that if he got his (Turrets-2) from ANM School, those do not count toward the two required receipts of skill's knowledges? In which case he has Gunner-0 (Turrets-2). See page 144, end of first column up into the beginning of the second column.

The last is mostly nit-picky, but it should be Trade (Electronics-1).

EDIT: Also, where is the Genetic Profile? If this is an example he should note his GP die as well as the two die total. Also missed the Honors roll for OTC. (Tsk, tsk, Saint Timmii of the Gamer is crying in shame. :p) Need to show that Risk and Reward mechanic in use. Same deal for Promotion. Show your work! Dangnabbit, think of the poor noobs who use this in the future.

Another thing I just realized, he has no Gunner skill as Gunner is now Soldier Skill. Please, use your Errata, sir.

In the Merchant Career, where does the DM +2 come from when he tries for Promotion. And yet another thing, how is getting Promoted twice in one Term? Oh, you didn't label the Rating Promotion and Officer Promotion. That is better, but still confusing to the point where I had to look it up on the sheet. You're killing me here, Rob. :p (In the Skills section of Merchant Term 1, Trade really should be capitalized.)

And here I must close because I have other things to do, like take care of the Ship's Cat, eat breakfast and work on my game, etc. Mostly it boils down to show all the work so that new Travellers can see and understand the whole process.

Very Cool! A blast from the past. Captain Jamison may have just been the first Traveller character I ever played, if I remember right.

I get sloppy the further along the chargen process goes, so there's lots to do to get it fully worked out, but it's a good start, and I make progress as long as Craig keeps complaining abiut what a shoddy job I've done so far. :)

Like say...

You need to make his writing skill, it should be Arts (Author-1). There are a couple others like the Trades (Explosives-1) and such, more later.

Still missing the +1 Edu from college. On page 75 that SEH in his second of 3 terms in the Soldiers grants him a Life Membership in TAS

Hi,

If he is a Knight should not his Soc be "B"?

Well done for providing the Traveller mandatory example of chargen

Kind Regards

David

There are several things I still must check:

1. Where was the college located? not having said I would think he was on Dinom still. Is this technically Term 1? Errata says he should have gained +1 Edu as his Edu was already 8, from what I recall of CT/MT honors granted a further +1 Edu, has that changed?

3. What was the missing year of Army (Soldier) service? I saw Battle, Siege, and Strike...
