T5 Cybernetics

parmasson

SOC-14 1K
Has there been any hint of how or if the new system will deal with cybernetics?

I hate having to borrow from Shadowrun for our implants.

At a guess, I'd say you have about 10 pages of tables where you roll randomly for body part and cybernetic modification... ;)

Now, now just because I see other versions of Traveller as mongrels and heretical perversions does not mean I do not have an open mind.
:D ;)

Ummmmmm . . . . .

However, instead of failing your survival roll you could roll to see which body part gets blasted off and replaced! Fail your rolls three times and die, except in the case of a head shot.

To you sir !

Any receipt of a characteristic alteratation during character generation could be explained as augmentation of some kind - either by cybernetic, or biotech, means ;)

And no, there have been no hints so far about cybernetics.

IMHO FF&S would be a good place to start...

Heh, our house rules did the opposite - stat loss (due to failed survival rolls, another house rule) was often put down to cybernetic replacements. Our TU didn't have cybernetic enhancement, in fact a lot of cyber-bits were downright inferior ...

That works too ;)

But in an OTU where limb regeneration appears at TL9, nerve refusion and artificial eyes at TL11, enhanced prosthetics TL12, and cloned body parts at TL13 you'd have to be an unlucky character indeed to suffer stat reduction due to injury in service ;)

If you haven't kept up on your insurance payments though...

I second that

Hmmm... all these organics make me think of bio-implants (grafted vat-grown "organs") rather than cybernetic ones - especially since the Traveller universe is far more bio-friendly than cyber-friendly (many gene-mods and Ancient-biomodded Humans and Dogs).

I agree, the OTU does tend to be more bio-tech friendly.
But there are canon examples of cybernetics being used - although often with stigma attached.

CT cannon or MT/TNE cannon? If it's CT, may I have the reference, please?

Each of the following gets a pargraph of info:

prosthetics, bionics, cyborg;

in the first part of the Robots article found in JTAS issue 2.

The SuSAG article in JTAS 16 mentions that the Medical and Surgical Products Devision produces prosthetic devices such as replacement limbs.

There is the Computer Implants article in JTAS 22, and one of the Specialized surgical skills in the "The Imperial Academy of Science and Medicine" article is Transplant/Reattachment surgery - which includes "reattachment of limbs (including both living limbs and prosthetics)".

The MT adventure Knightfall includes a scenario entitled "Cyborg".

HTH ;)

A number of the DGP products speak about the role of cyborgs in society, attaching a heavy social stigma to cybernetics modifications. It is noted that on some worlds, even one cybernetic prosthesis can make one become defined as a machine, and therefore property.

You know, that really sounds like a Vilani thing to me. "You have served Naasirka well Haamarin, and we mourn the sacrifce you have made for us: your family will be honored. As set out in the book of Agaanshaga, the loss of your limbs and their replacement by profane metal equals a loss of your soul. You are now and forever the property of Naasirka. But do not despair, we shall treat you well 74-B-90032."

In general I like to think that most of the prohibitions and prejudices against certain forms of tech are Vilani in origin. Not just because they are a little insular and traditional, but because they genuinely know better. I like to think that the Second Imperium is littered with stories of Solomani disregarding Vilani prohibitions on genetic engineering, bio-tech, cybernetics, etc, and then paying a horrible, horrible price for it. But then again, I may just be looking for a way to adapt 'Tomb of the Cybermen' into a Traveller adventure.
