T4 Skills

Do people think that T4 characters get too many skills?

Most T4 careers give 1 skill level per YEAR, which in my mind is excessive. I am thinking of running T4 sometime soon and, taking a page from another version, I am thinking 2 skill levels per term plus extras from commission, promotion etc. would be more appropriate. What say you?

I like the T4 skill levels much as they are.

IMNHO most CT/MT basic CG characters are not skilled enough by at least four skill levels (total, which is to say that they have at least four too few skills; this can be split between new skills and higher skill levels).

I think that 1 skill per year is definitely too many IF YOU GET EXTRAS from promotion, position, first term.

Mind you, MT averaged right about 2.2 per term, and CT about 1.5 per term... T4 averages about 5 per term or so... (Roughly 40% chance of position or promotion, and roughly 60% chance of special duty)

I actually worked the math at one point.

So T4 ISN'T "one per year" it's about 1.25 per year. ANd I found that it leads to more abuse when combined with the T4/T4.1/T5 task system.

But I like abuse... :(

I'd not mind the higher skill rates if
A1) the task system wasn't making atts 1:1 with skills for target numbers
-OR-
A2) The skill rates cost multiple receipts to raise an attribute
--AND--
B) it wasn't determining the number of dice to throw with the difficulty of the task.
--AND--
C) There was a reasonable upper limit on skill assets.

One thing to keep in mind is that skills function differently in T4 vs. MT or CT. A skill point in T4 is generally worth less than in CT, so more skills levels seem reasonable.

THe task system, however, makes a level of difficulty roughly 3.5 points in t4, vs a known 4 in MT & 2300, and a doubling in TNE.

So the task system calls BS on that, prospero. Adding a die only adds 3.5 to the needed asset. Skills are thus worth MORE per level in terms of tasks.

TNE is different enough that I don't think it invites direct comparison in terms of the # of skill levels.

Point taken regarding the MT rules. I had clearly forgotten the MT rules, which just give a +1 per level.

What I was referring to is that, in CT at least, one skill level often provides a +2 or more bonus to the roll per level, not just +1. Granted this is not true for all skills.

T4 of course allows for runaway attributes if one doesn't apply house rules to control that in some way.

Well, it does serve to even out the gap between stats and skills a bit, which otherwise seems like it will be quite big with the T4 dice mechanics
