T 5 Has arrived!!!!

Hi Folks!

Marc in New Jersey and T5 arrived on my doorstep today!

Count yourselves lucky as I have paused here to let you folks know before even loading it up!

Marc

Please remember that detailed reviews are NOT yet allowed. I've made this very clear in the private forum, but based on the contents of this thread, some of you aren't reading that...

(I've sent PMs to the appropriate persons).

Sorry, for the curious, but until Marc says we can discuss it in public, T5 remains closed content.

Remember also, Don: not everyone who preordered is going to be active here. Most, sure... but not all. I've seen a few references elsewhere. It's likely there WILL be leaks.

Is it available mail order only, or can I swing by friendly gaming store to pick it up? Can we at least discuss that much?

YOU (or Marc) needs to post this elsewhere as well. T5 is being pummeled on MgT's website because people are asking and those who can answer are saying nothing. "Why should I buy T5?" followed by silence is being interpreted as speaking volumes...

I've pre-ordered but am not signed up for the T5 forum. So I'm wondering...

1) Uh... why?

People are receiving THE most anticipated Traveller item in years, and they're not supposed to talk about it?

2) Whatever the reason, don't you think that's unrealistic, so why even try to enforce it?

3) Don't you think that asking people not to talk about a game upon release, as opposed to weeks/months later, is the worst marketing strategy ever?

I got mine yesterday. It's un realistic that I'd have anything to say , because I have not yet begun to read, what's on my cd. (It got here only yesterday evening what can I tell you?)

I think the issue might be (and please realize that I don't actually have knowledge of this) that this is not really the finished product but a "beta" release, and therefore an ettempt is being made to impose some sort of NDA on it. Just a guess from comments I have seen.

If I am in the ballpark on this, it is a very ill-considered idea, and will result in me not ordering a CD even though it is now out. Assuming I even still could.

If so, then I suggest either to do a closed playtest or an open one. See Pathfinder for a successful example of the latter strategy.

But not a closed playtest on one hand, an "open" PDF--"open" in the sense of "widely accessible to non-playtesters"--on the other. That can't work.

I have the same questions and comments that Rhialto has. If the game has been released, then what's the deal?

Um, it is a playtest. So... there ya go! And it's more like an alpha test; the feedback from this'll generate the beta. So much fun, so muuuuch fuuuun.... !

If you you sign on, get yourself in the door, instead of being a bunch of pansies--or is it posies? maybe you can be a part of it... Just my 2 cents!

Just the facts (or at least some of them)

I am not in any position of authority nor of any knowledge beyond what has been told to those of us who have pre-ordered, but I will try to sum up the facts as I understand them, based on Don's posts as well as relayed and direct communications from Mr. Miller.

T5 is still in development. It has not actually been "released for publication". Rather, Mr. Miller decided to ship CDs with what are, according to the text on the CD case, "the initial files for Traveller5". In the e-mail sent to (most) pre-order customers, this is described as "the 'preliminary' edition of T5". The box also states: "This CD-ROM contains the initial material for Traveller5, and is subject to change before publication in print form."

These CDs have only been sent to those who pre-ordered Traveller5 previously. I have no idea what happens if you order the T5 CD from the www.farfuture.net site today.

Recipients of the CD are enjoined from discussing the specifics of the contents publicly. However, speaking solely from the table of contents, at least the absolute minimum elements required to play the game are present, and more besides.

However, this is not the complete T5, nor, as I understand it, is it intended to be so.

I do not believe any ETA for the completed edition for general publication has been given.

Um, it is a playtest. So... there ya go!

Um, where do I go, again?

Not to a playtest forum, that's for sure.

I guess I need to reiterate the simple point I made.

Want a sikkrit playtest? -> Release sikkrit files to sikkrit testers.

Want an open playtest, which inevitably generates non-playtest discussions in non-playtest forums on the side? -> Release files openly.

Want to force people who puchased those open files to join the sikkrit club? -> Dream on.

On a different note, what is Marc afraid of?

So the game isn't ready yet. Fine. But that CD is going to have *some* playable elements, and more potential. So long as that's made clear, there's no harm in talking about it, on the contrary.

600 "sikkrit" playtesters... sheesh! Not forcing anything on anyone, wait for the freakin release already! And if you don't like it, leave...

It is a free forum, after all.
