The All Terrain Vehicles listed in CT's LBB3 are relatively low-tech models, of the kind used by free traders, small-scale freelancer explorers and their likes; high tech (TL9+) governments would probably like to equip their Scouts with better equipment, yet of a low enough TL to allow repairs on a multitude of worlds.

High-Performance Tracked ATV (Tech Level 9)
The vehicle has a crew of 2 (Driver and Gunner). Its turret mounts a pulse laser with direct fire control. Height: 4.25m (+turret, 1m). Width: 4.5m. Length: 7.5m. Total volume: 143.38m^3 (approximately 10 ship dtons). Weight: 61.83 tons. Cargo Space: 19m^3. Passengers: 16 (including crew) with long-term accomodations. Price: Cr538,476.9.

Nice vehicles. Good work.

One question: why is the turret front armor less than the armor on the turret sides and rear? Usually it's done the other way around (on the hull of these vehicles, for instance, you have heavier front armor).

It has the same thickness, it's just vertical instead of moderately sloped. The Tank in the vehicle design example had a vertical front to the turret; I could probably just change it to Moderate as well, but I might need to enlarge the turret.

Ok, here are two ground car designs, both primitive (TL5) and thus horribly inefficient, but they are manufacturable and maintainable on a wide range of worlds.

Truck (Tech Level 5)
The vehicle has a crew of 1 (Driver). Height: 3m. Width: 3m. Length: 6m. Total volume: 54m^3 (approximately 4 ship dtons). Weight: 51.92 tons. Cargo Space: 32m^3. Passengers: 1. Price: Cr15,440.

You might want to consider using Andrew Keith's suggested variants for making "civilian" vehicles in STRIKER, from JTAS #14.

He suggested thinking of the passenger area of an automobile as a fixed "turret" to allow the vehicle to have the proper dimensions.

He also recommended allowing powerplants (and cargo spaces) with a fractional volume less than 1 cubic meter.

He also provided suggestions for designing motorcycles (or other riding vehicles). Basically you don't count the driver/riders in the vehicle volume (he/they are on top, not inside) and the proportion of length to width can be up to 5-1, rather than the standard 2.5-1. Factional powerplants/cargo volumes would be standard and the suspension should take up most (50-75%) of the vehicle (grav cycles might be less). Vehicle height should never be more than 1 meter (unless you're designing a cycle for a really tall lifeform).

And finally, Keith suggested that trailers could be designed as vehicles without powerplants. The combined weight of tow vehicle and trailer would be used for calculating the speed of the tow vehicle with the trailer.

It's a good article.

Thanks for pointing me to it!
I'll read it and then re-design my vehicles. By the way, what should be realistic dimensions of a Sedan, a Truck or a Motorcycle? Was I even close?

I think your dimensions were pretty close: maybe the Sedan could be a bit longer, but maybe not.

As for a motorcycle, I think it would be about 0.3 to 0.4 meters wide, about 1.5 to 2.0 meters long, and 1 meter tall (on average). Of course, that's a motorcycle for a human.

Armored Car ("Wheeled AFV", Tech Level 6)
The vehicle has a crew of 3 (Driver, Gunner and Commander). Its turret mounts two heavy machine guns with direct fire control. Height: 2m (+turret, 1m). Width: 3m. Length: 4.5m. Total volume: 27m^3 (approximately 2 ship dtons). Weight: 27.69 tons. Cargo Space: 2m^3. Price: Cr53,609.

Movement: Road, 65kph/54cm; cross-country, 13kph/11cm).

Movement Effect on Fire: Move up to 1/2, -4 EFP; move more than 1/2, -4 FFP, no EFP.

Armor: Chassis front, rear, and sides, 18; chassis belly and deck, 12; turret front, rear and sides, 18; turret deck, 12.

Target Size DMs: +1 high, +2 low.

Equipment: 200-power radio; 6 turret-mounted smoke dischargers.

Power: 0.5 megawatt improved internal combustion power plant consumes 250 liters fuel per hour; fuel capacity is 1,500 liters, enough for six hours.

Weapon: The 2 heavy machine guns mounted in the turret may engage four targets each and have a signature DM of +2. Use the stats presented in Striker Book 3 (Crew Served Weapons Table).

Main Battle Tank ("Tracked AFV", Tech Level 6)
The vehicle has a crew of 4 (Driver, Gunner, Loader and Commander). Its turret mounts a 7.5cm high velocity gun and a coaxial medium machine gun with direct fire control. Height: 1.5m (+turret, 1.5m). Width: 3.5m. Length: 6.5m. Total volume: 50.93m^3 (approximately 3.75 ship dtons). Weight: 73.93 tons. Price: Cr130,732.

Movement: Road, 45kph/38cm; cross-country, 18kph/15cm).

Movement Effect on Fire: Move up to 1/2, -4 EFP; move more than 1/2, -4 FFP, no EFP.

Armor: Chassis front, 42; chassis rear, 25; chassis sides, 23; chassis belly and deck, 18; turret front, 40; turret rear, 25; turret sides, 34.

Target Size DMs: +2 high, +2 low.

Equipment: 200-power radio; turret-mounted searchlight (both visible and active IR); passive IR.

Power: 1 megawatt improved internal combustion power plant consumes 500 liters fuel per hour; fuel capacity is 2,500 liters, enough for five hours.

Weapon: The heavy machine gun mounted in a cupola mount on top of the turret (operated by the Tank commander) and the medium machine gun mounted coaxially are described in Striker Book 3 (Crew Served Weapons Table). The 75mm (7.5cm) gun is described here. The gunner operates both the 7.5cm gun and the coaxial MMG.

The Tirovski-Yang Consortium is a massive heavy equipment and vehicles corporation IMTU; these Air/Rafts are the first in a series of rugged colonial and exploratory vehicles produced by that corp that I'll post here.

Not bad. It's fun to play with STRIKER, isn't it?

VERY fun. Very good design system, allows creation of varied and interesting designs for Traveller use. And not as complex as I thought - I don't have the spreadsheet (the link to it in the CT-Striker Yahoo! group is broken), and I am still able to design a complex vehicle (such as the tank) in little more than an hour. Sure, it isn't LBB2 (I could build several LBB2 ships in an hour...), but it's FUN!

OK, updated the Air/Raft to look more like the one in CT-LBB3 in terms of speed. Ofcourse, it's less than half the price, but I prefer the more accurate Striker design rules (I suppose that the CT-LBB3 vehicle stats were guesstimated/invented by MWM loosely based on 1970's vehicles).

Standard-Atmosphere Grav Car (Tech Level 9)
The vehicle has a crew of 1 (Driver). Height: 1.5m. Width: 2.5m. Length: 3.5m. Total volume: 10.5m^3 (exactly 0.75 CT ship dtons). Weight: 4.53 tons. Cargo Space: 1m^3. Passengers: 2 besides the Driver. Price: Cr30,294 (round to MCr0.03 when including in a ship design).

Note: Uses the house rule (inspired by the JTAS article) allowing civilian vehicles to have power plants of less than 1m^3 in size. Also, while I tried to get a minimal design, it is still vastly expensive when compared to a ground car or to the CT-LBB3 costs of living.
