Striker and suppression

PhilB

SOC-12
Hi all,
If I understand the rules-as-written for Striker correctly, suppression can only occur if a unit takes casualties, is near an enemy unit or near a friendly unit taking casualties (rule 12B 1&2) and then fails its morale roll by 1. Has anyone got a modification to the rules to better reflect suppression of a unit by weight of fire that doesn't cause casualties?
Thanks.

The quickest and easiest house rule is to let any fireteam equipped with a rapidfire weapon (those with a +x autofire DM on their to-hit rolls) elect to place a suppression marker on any enemy stand they might otherwise engage with aimed fire. Likewise rapidfire crew-served weapons may elect to place one suppression marker. That uses their whole fire phase, and they may not engage any other target.

No roll is made to hit. The suppression marker is automatically placed on the target, provided it is a legitimate direct fire target.

The suppression marker has all the normal effects listed in Rule 12.C.1 of CT/STriker Book 1.

I like this idea....but I wonder;

What if you can shoot at more than 2 targets? what about 16 targets? still just suppress one unit?

what if the auto fire weapon cannot penetrate (TL6 LMG vs. combat armor)?

What about those that can barely penetrate?

Any range limitations (can one suppress at extreme range?)

what about flechette rounds - can they suppress (they have a sort of "auto-fire" bonus)?

would a nuclear air burst suppress? 8)

Fair questions. But I would limit it to just one target per fire phase regardless of your available targets. You're concentrating on trying to suppress a fireteam by making a lot of bullets (or similar) fly around in its vicinity in a short space of time.

Moreover, under Striker the targets you can engage are not anywhere but rather are within an extremely restricted area (only up to 2cm IIRC from the line of fire to your primary target). Thus although 16 targets sounds great, if your opponent is anywhere near competent he won't line his fireteams up so you can engage more than a few of them using targets:16.

I don't think penetration should matter. This is about things flying about in close proximity and making the fireteam hug the dirt. Operational Research has suggested that suppression is from the noise, the surrounding foliage getting chewed up, etc. Self preservation instincts set in.

Out to the maximum range of the weapon at which an autofire bonus is given. (so, no autofire bonus then no suppression possible at that rangeband).
