SK-19

The SK-19's stats were omitted by accident from the 2300AD rules. They're only in the Traveller : 2300 (the first editon) rules, or maybe some errata, as far as I know.

I've heard that it was "omitted by accident" or "omitted for the sake of space", too, but I don't buy it. The SK-19 fired a round with a high DPV and was *very* controllable in full-auto mode. That combined with the grenade launcher made it a very munchkin-desirable toy indeed. If they were common in your Traveller:2300/2300AD universe, why would you use any other rifle (except for the long-range sniper weapons, of course)?

I've heard of more than one campaign where obtaining SK-19s was the object of the campaign! And I have been in adventures where members of my party and I were facing foes armed with SK-19s. Many of us were armored with Hi-threat combat helmets and were praying that if we had to get shot, that we be shot in the head! (If memory serves, the HTCH was the only personal armor in 2300 that would stop a round from an SK-19/Traylor M2).

In short, it is my belief that the SK-19 was killed by its own lethality.

i recall that in the module 'arcturus incident' that the american were equippped with an assault rifle that had the same statistics as the sk-19. only more expensive.

Also, there is an article from the 2300AD Resource in KevinC's PentaPod site that details the Sk-19. Pretty sure that is the Sk-19 listed in my Traveller: 2300 book.

http://www.geocities.com/pentapod2300/jay/sk19.htm

The M-5, found in Mission Arcturus, was an American development of the M-2, but was functionally similiar to the Sk-19.

Layering your armor helps. Rigid Vest over Full-Body Inertial Armor was the favorite of most national militaries, IIRC. Full Body Combat for assault-type troops, US Marines and German Drachenzahntruppen.

Personally, I always prefered the Sk-19/M-5, the A-9 or the F-19 for "real" combat (ie Kafer War). PC's running around the streets with military grade firepower always brought down police and SAGs (Special Action Groups) in my games. Well, they obviuosly must be terrorists or something.

Terrorists? Do I remember having someone on the bridge (not me, I was guarding the airlock) threaten to blow our drives while we were docked to the beanstalk station? (And coincidentally, I think I was armed with an SK-19 at the time...)

Yes, as you might expect, this unfortunate situation ended badly. For me, worse than most. I'd spent the campaign devoutly avoiding space because I feared dying in an explosive decompression situation. What do you think the local authorities did after cutting off our outer hatch? (Blew an umbilical.... and there went I, with no time to get into a suit.... unlike the PCs on the bridge, who actually got to run a bit of a StarCruiser fight before going down....)

So, your point seems well aimed, to my mind. Note to self: Don't let loudmouths do the communicating with the authorities when trouble is on the horizon.

LOL.
Ahh. The SK-19. Makes me all misty eyed. I remember a long campaign where we were trying to smuggle them out of Hochbaden and on to Tanstaafl, only to end up getting shot down by the flipping Kafers as we were on final approach to port Blackjack. A whole cargo hold full of SK-19's in packing grease, a Kafer horde on the way and me with just a Chip Traylor 57.

Military grade firepower and space DO NOT mix well. Running Traveller (aka "Classic Traveller") with a group of characters from another GM many, many years ago...

They are all decked out in Battledress and FGMP-15s. Decide to become pirates one day. Chase after a merchant ship, disable the drives with a few well placed laser shots and prepare to board her. Step thru the airlock and are fired upon by the merchant's crew with Snub Pistols and Shotguns, which patters off the Battledress like some much rain. Lead PC opens up with his FGMP-15 on the hapless crew, going to fry them into Crispie Critters(TM) for daring to shot at him. Rolls dice...Misses...Big.

Draw a line of fire on the deck plans of the merchant ship. Roll dice, hits bulkhead behind target crewman. Roll dice, bulkhead gives way. Behind bulkhead, Hydrogen Fuel Cell.

GM: "And there is a short intense burst of light and radiation as the ship's fuel is converted from matter into energy. It breifly flares up as a second source of fuel is dicovered by the tiny, ravenous sun born in deep space. It dies just as quickly as it was born, leaving no trace that it ever was."

Lead PC: "So, do I get my second shot?"
