Roanferret

The Roanferret is a large pouncer-type. It's jaws alone can inflict 3D damage. It has a surprise DM of +2, and an attack DM of +2.

The Roanferret's fur is a mottled brown when born, but soon changes to a rusty brown with red highlights.

It's usual M.O. is to stalk its prey, or wait in ambush, blending into the ruddy background of it's native semi-arid habitat, then leaping on top of it's victim and biting the neck for an almost instant kill.

The Roanferret seems to delight in killing, wiping out entire herds of Leaperveldts before stopping to eat just one or two of it's vicitims - leaving the remaining carcasses for the scavenging Skrakets and Brees.

This predeliction for wanton slaughter has led the Galanglic-speaking locals to call the Roanferret by it's more popular name...

Run-For-It!

If this thing is panther- or cougar-sized, this could make for a "the hunter being hunted" sort of scenario. Especially if the big bastard moves on to the "Mutual of Aramanx" tri-d crew along to holo the adventure.

Oops, left that part out...

The first person to observe one of these creatures (and survive) reports that a full-grown Roanferret is about tiger-sized, but with a leaner body structure (much like that of a long-legged weasel or ferret, hence the name). The chisel-fangs are located in the front part of the upper jaw, they serve as a cross between incisors and canines on an Earth mammal.

The paws have four digits each and a non-functional dewclaw. the digits are about 5cm long and tipped with stout claws for grasping and rending. It is not unusual to see a Roanferret sitting back on its haunches and stuffing its face with great handfulls of meat from a fresh kill, much as one might see a person attack a bowl of pretzels.

They have an intellect roughly equivalent to an ape, which is expressed through a devious animal cunning, and they seem to enjoy killing for the sake of killing.

With the drive and appetite of a tiger, in the form of a giant ferret, and the reasoning ability of great ape, its a very good thing that they don't also possess opposable thumbs.

Yippee! Something else for my Hunter NPC to add to his trophy wall.
Now...where can I find a band of hardy adventurers, down on their luck, who can act as porters (and possibly pallbearers...)...?
Good job with this lethal beastie!

Hey, I'll sign up, if it has a way to get me married to have a widow and children (of my own, thank you verra much) to leave behind and have despair over...

Seriously, it's a cool critter. I think I'll take some for my own setting!

One final note:

I usually spring this critter (*) on a group of players who have become a little too sure of themselves. It's a great way to 'winnow out the chaff' from the good players.

(* - No, I did not intend the pun...)
