[PPF] Structure Points

Under ship conversion p. 56 it states that for ships over 100,000 dt there is 1 structure box for each 2,000 dt. So the 200,000 dt Plankwell should have 100 structure points but the SSD has 160. Many SSDs appear wrong. Am I missing something? Was there errata published or new SSDs? Same problem appears for the mid size ships too.

I don't have my rulebook with me, so this is from memory.

As I recall, the Structure Points (SP) in PPF are calculated according to a sliding scale; a ship gets 1 SP for so many dtons (500 dtons, IIRC) up to a limit (10,000 dtons, as I recall), then they get one SP for every so many more dtons (I don't remember the breakpoints), and there is final third level of SPs awarded.

The idea was to make the smaller ships less fragile.

My rule book shows:

up to 10,000 dT 1 structure box per 500dT

10,001 to 100,000 dT 1 structure box per 1000dT

100,001dT + 1 structure box per 2000dT

Just a thought, but to prevent a bit of min/maxing, it would make sense if you added 10 boxes to the 10K to 100K range and 50 boxes to the 100K+ range. Otherwise there's a really big incentive to build at the 10K and 100K marks and a disincentive to build anything between the ranges of 10,001 to 20,000 and 100,001 to 200,000 since you would get *fewer* boxes for the larger size.

Of course, in RL, thinks like that don't come in neatly defined "blocks"... it's mostly a relative measure.

You don't get fewer blocks; the different ranges add together.

For an example, let's take the Plankwell BB that started this: 200,000 dtons. That much tonnage is converted to Structure Points (SP) like this:

From 0 to 10,000 dtons - one SP per 500 dtons gives 20 SP.
From 10,001 to 100,000 dtons - one SP per 1000 dtons gives 90 more SP for a total of 110 SP.
From 100,001 dtons to 200,000 dtons gives 50 more SP for a total of 160 SP, which is the total that RMN told us about in the beginning.
