Police Career

Dragoner

SOC-14 1K
Admin Award 2022
It would be interesting to see what one could come up with, I use a modified CT, but this career has always been missing in CT. I suppose lots of Gun Combat, Admin, Brawling, Vehicle skills; all very potent adventurer skills though.

I remember a few of us were discussing this few years ago around these parts. Maybe in the CT forum. I know I have some stuff on it from those days, but I'll have to go searching about for it.

Interesting to see what there is, thanks Ranger!

Is the Agent a police officer? T5 also has something similar, but iirc, it's more of a secret agent type.

Spica's Career Book 1 has the Space Patrol career for MGT but it could easily be adapted to CT. And their Book 2 has Port Authority, Secret Police and Search & Rescue careers - all very cool options for a cop-style campaign.

I would say Investigate, Streetwise and Persuade would be pretty important for cops too. And of course Deception for those undercover blokes ;)

The Spica books are great, I highly recommend them for an economical way of expanding chargen and adding detail to your setting. Nope, not affiliated, just a fan.

MGT core rulebook has the career Agent with one speciality being Law Enforcement. Book 5: Agent has an expanded Law Enforcement generation with 3 specialties under it; Patrol, Special Operations (SWAT), and Customs.

All of the suggested skills thus far seem reasonable.

Computer 0: Not programming, just entry of data for all of that paperwork.
Interview/Interrogate: Does that fall under the Persuade skill? Perhaps one of the most important.
Law 0: 0 skill level would cover knowing basic criminal code, but not up to par with an attorney.

Traveller fan + Criminal Justice degree + 19 years law enforcement makes this my favorite thread topic. :D

I'm pretty sure I recall a Law Enforcement career for MT, and maybe even CT in one of the JTAS, but I'll have to check later for more specific locations and if my memory is right.

So I had a chance to check, and yes MT (Players' Manual) has a Law Enforcement career.

The only thing in JTAS on a quick look was a discussion article by Loren Wiseman (JTAS 14) about Police Forces in Traveller. No char-gen though.

No, it isn't... it's in Supplement 4. Ok, basic gen is. Still.

Nope, not in S4 Wil. Somewhere in CT I still feel, but I can't recall or find just where. We might both be thinking the same source (maybe it'll turn up). Or maybe it was a common house-rule addition.

Yes, when I 1st read the OP I could have sworn that there was in MT too. Getting old, my internal DB is slowing down.

It's in MT player's handbook, p.22-23 - "Law Enforcer" - it's one of two or three that ISN'T in S4 nor B1...

The CT one might be in a dragon magazine. I'm not finding it, however...

I have seen a few people here mention being Police Officers, so I thought definitely that there could be some good imput. I can see at least four cascades:

Patrol
Detective
Tactical
Administration

Depending on how detailed you wanted to get you could add a few more. The names need some work:

Urban Patrol vs. Rural Patrol: Lots of swap outs for skills between the two. Think Marshall on the Fronter vs. Big City Cop.
Tech Crimes Unit: Computer crimes, cyberpunk-related crimes, an office job. If you didn't want to get too detailed like this, if could fall under Detective.
Warrant Hunter: Official/Government version of the bounty hunter that hunts down high felons that flee the system. May bring Tactical guys along.

If you look at the law section of my Terran Dawn Campaign Guide (in link below, the Old Earth PDF, page 89+), there are some details on a Travelleresque police force with details on types of divisions some detailed down to equipment carried.

Here is something I put together a long, long time ago: I just scanned it out of one of my original notebooks from back in the late seventies so it's slightly cringe-worthy but maybe it will help spark some ideas. The combat skill called Omni (yeah, there;s some cringing) is applied equally to melee weapons and unarmed combat so its a catch-all multidisciplinary combat skill. In other words at Omni-2 you essentially have hands -2 and blade -2 .

The Terran Confederation Peace Enforcers were called "varks",, shortened slan for aardvark - or "earth pig".

Their jurisdiction was the area of "startown" - that nefarious den of sin, organ-leggers, con men, and general badness that surrounds most starport...but it outside the fence so it isn't controlled by the Marines and starport security goons.

These guys have grav bikes (yup, in my juvenile way I named those "Electra-Glides) and armored ground cars. After Blade Runner i made th ground cars into Spinners. Oh the shame of it all.

So, here you are, including a portrait of a typical 'vark in full gear.
