Mongoose 2300AD: Point defense cluster stats

Brandon C

SOC-13
I was working on my first ship design for the game, and noticed there were no stats for PDCs, except for the PDC-17 that appears in the Kennedy-class cruiser writeup. Did I miss them or are they not there? If they aren't in the book, are they listed anywhere online?

The stats for PDC are in the weaponry table, under the particle beams. Two appear (both british designs), Type 17 DC and Type 29 DC.

Yep, there they are. I must have skipped over them because the header wasn't in bold (thought it was another particle beam entry) and wasn't in the same order as in the regular text.

Gracias.

Now that I have found the entries, they do cause me to raise my eyebrows. Both PDCs are TL12, British and effectively the same cost, but one gives a +1 and the other 1 +2. I see only two reasons why any design should use the Type 17:

(1) The TL listed is incorrect and it should be 11 instead of 12. This is the easiest solution.

(2) The Type 17 is an export model; British and commonwealth ships only use the Type 29. The Kennedy class missile cruiser uses the Typ2 17, which tends to support this solution.

(3) Both. The Type 17 is for export and is TK11.

Without seeing several Commonwealth designs, there really isn't a good way to tell which was intnded. Any opinions?

In PDC definition we find:

(...) a PDC is a set of rapid-firing, short-reange laser weapons designed with UTES targeting system (...)

In UTES definition we find:

UTES takes 1 ton, costs Lv600,000 and is available at TL12

So, I believe this discards both, option 1 and 3 you give, leaving us with option 2 by default (as I agree with you those are the logical options, as just the Lv100,000 savings for the Type 17 are not worth the reduced DM).

This is, IMHO, also reinforced by the fact the Kennedy class, being the pride of US Space Navy and its more modern cruisers, mounts the Type 17, not the Type 26.

As a side note: how can US being listed as TL 11, build those TL 12 (as they use New Military stutterwarp and PDCs) ships?

They may actually be TL12 ;) Of eight entries in the weapons and drones tables, America has two listed as TL11 ... and six at TL12.

I guess US in at some point between TL 11 and 12, with the military being in their cutting edge. Probaly they are listed as TL 11 due to economic fields being so (unless its TL11 is an errata).
