Play by email game?

Just a thought, but is anyone up for a play by email game? Even though I haven't played for years, I'd like to get back into Traveller. Seems like quite a few folks are looking for a game, and perhaps a solution might be for a play by email game. Might be kinda slow, but it's a start.

Of course, after a while, maybe we can graduate to something like GRIP. ;)

Ron

You don't need GRIP to run a Classic Traveller game. I'm running an online camapign at the moment on a fairly normal chatroom, albeit one with a dice roller - but even the dice roller isn't strictly necessary (although very useful). If you want to see how such a gaem is played, some of our logs are up at:

As soon as I find out my next set of orders (the navy's jerkin' my chain right now *laugh all you want TJ*) I'll be running one (I'd like to do chat, but pbem would be cool too) in the near future. Wouldn't mind joining one either, come to think of it...

RabidVargr,

Well, that's two of us, at least.
We should keep in touch while waiting for the Navy to decide what they want to do.

Not a prob, but with Bush rattlin chains I may just end up tranferred to the next outbound destroyer, headed for Iraq and hopefully soon; Saudi Arabia. ;) "Harpoon on the rail!"

OK, so it isn't totally traveller...
but it is a interesting game...

gimme a look, or an email.
I have a few land based games going, but i am rather inclined to start a space based one.
all i need are players.
INVASION will be a fun bit for me...
i already got it all planned out...

PBeM would be fun.

I suppose this is the forum. Do we have a ref out there?

Failling any other volunteers, I'd ref, but it's not my first preference.

Rotating ref needs a fairly strict agreed universe. Strict Canon is probably a good one although I would prefer small ships traveller.

So If I list a set of things that I would like in the "Consensual Traveller Universe", we can bounce them arround till people ar ehappy with them.

I like small ship traveller - There may be heavy metal arround however the players are unlikely to see much bigger than a Gazelle. A gazelle is nasty enough that it's arrival would signal the end of whatever conflict is arround while the combatants try to look innocent (They can't out run it and only a fool would try and fight)

I like fairly loose imperium - the empire is holding this area with a very loose hand, as long as nobody starts actually dropping rocks on inhabited worlds or raiding imperial bases, then the players can get away with literal murder. Of course if they mess a noble arround, the situation can change for them individually.

I like poor players - one of the reasons they keep accepting the "dodgy" jobs is that it;s the only way to make ends meet.

I like players who progress fairly quickly and start at fairly low level - I'm not sure how this will work with the written rules - I was origionally tempted to just start them at first, however that isn;t how the writers intended the game to be played - I can be swayed on this if people prefer otherwise

Can those who would fancy participating jump in with more things they like (or shoot some of mine down)

My view of the Imperium is summed up by just a few words: "It can't be everywhere at once". The Imperium is a factor if the ref wants it to be and/or the story demands it.

I'm not interested in literal murder, just troubleshooting/adventuring.

I favor either the CT or MT rules, pretty much the same thing, but definitely CT for ship designs.

How does the Regina subsector sound?

Dunno about that strict agreed upon universe. It's kinda fun if one ref does his thing, the next ref *Cant* change what the first ref put down, but can add his own spill on things, and so on and so on. Fun if you do it w/in reason. Don't let TJ ref till the very end though or we'll be in for some wacked out stuff. ;)

Oh yeah, I'd go for it too. I can't reff right away cause I'm up for transfer at any time and it'd not be healthy for the game to start it up, then let it drop my xfer month, and try getting it rolling again. After I'm moved though I can reff no prob for a while though.

How do you plan on running the PBEM. post, reply, post, reply method? or are there plans to log on in a chat room somewhere at a specified date and time?
Need a millieu and ideas for the setting.

Hey, there's some interest again! :D

Rotating ref would be fine. I'd be willing to take my turn as ref (just not right away).

I do think that we should agree on a basic setting and rough guidelines. The "current" should be able to do his thing, but not suddenly add a wrinkle that blows everything away. For example, Ref 1 is running a CT type campaign in 1107. Ref 2 shouldn't come along and suddenly unleash the Virus.

Small ships is fine with me.

I'd like the 1-5 terms sort of characters (yes, big range).

How about agreeing on a rules set? CT? MT?

As far as how, I'd either suggest simple emails to each other or, perhaps creating a discussion forum here? Once in a blue moon, chat sort of game?

I'm really looking forward to getting a game started! :D

Ron

Folks may cringe but my suggestion is a Yahoo! group. It's free and I've found it easy to use. (Other sponsoring boards I've played on have been, well, daffy to say the least. (And not in the neat duck kind of sense).

CT or MT? Flip a coin as far as I'm concerned; I've pretty much always felt MT should have been called Advanced Traveller :D

1-5 term characters are also cool with me.

Last I prefer the classic era (~1105-1115) but I could be flexible. If I had to. I suppose. ;)

I've used Yahoo with success, as long as you immediatly uncheck all the "send me spam as much as you can fill my mailbox with so you can tell me I've used all my mailbox room" boxes.

How about T20? Try the new stuff and see how it works for you? That way too, we can run across the troubleshooting issues for rules together for F2F games we're currently running?

RV

I'd like to put in a vote for T20 to. I haven't refed an RPG in many years but I would be hapy to take a place in line as long as it isn't first.

I would also favour t20 - Although the books have yet to arrive in Aust (They are due at he warehouser today - so we should see them in the stores this weekend).

I prefer the CT mileu, however it doesn't really matter to me.

I don;t mind Yahoogroups - I play engarde through them and that goes OK.

I suppose, rather than starting the first game with house rules, we should just play exactly as the book suggests. Later adjustments based on experience.

Opinions Tout la monde?
