RE the long timescale, I think the OTU designers picked a perfect span. It's far enough ahead to justify almost any changes in Solomani/Terro-human cultures the Referee desires but near enough to our time that the Referee can also retain all sorts of connections and familiar elements.


I also really like the Vilani. A Human race whose culture has focused on long-term stability rather than disruptive progress having been the dominant interstellar power for a long time, and still an important influence in the current era, makes a lot of sense for a strange but still comprehensible far future.

I agree. After my own, 45 year-ish, history with the setting have moved from "Modern American's IN Spaaaaaace" to a greater appreciation of Three. Thousand. Years. along with just how different from modern political entities a polity like the Imperium would have to be in order to survive (thus my modeling on something more like early colonialism and the British Empire) but consciously picked modern cultural elements or artifacts to either retain and twist or completely remake.
