Ordocian (Major race in MTU)

So, this is a major race I've had in my head for a long time, but only recently converted to Traveller. Note that these really cant be PCs, unless all the PCs were Orodcian serving a single Queen. Anyway.. These are sort of a combination between Ants, The Covenant and Xenomorphs from Alien. Enjoy!

Ordocian – The Ordocian are an intelligent major race that has just recently appeared on the borders of known space, apparently from much deeper coreward. Little is known about the species by outsiders. In fact, most of the information presented herein is from a Ref’s prospective on the race. If the Ordocian have a name for themselves, it is unknown outside of their communities, and even the fact that they are a single species is just a guess by outsiders.

The Ordocian are a complex mosaic race, with a very adaptive genetic structure. Their society most definitely puts them into the classification of superorganism, like ants, their colonies are genetically divided into castes that perform their duties for the good of the whole community. Who created the Ordocian is unknown, though some hypothesis they are an experiment by the ancients that got out of hand, or that they are a natural fluke of evolution.

Ordocian Colonies can vary widely on appearance, as they are generally grown from the materials available at the currently location. Many compare these colonies to massive insect hives, with thick hardened lattice-like structures supporting massive networks of caves formed by bioorganic secretions and discarded chitin from the Queen’s Exoskeleton.

Mutation and Evolution: The Ordocian evolved on a world with a moderately radioactive climate. This led to many mutations within their culture, some for the good and some leading to disaster. Like most species, the Ordocian’s adaption to their changing environment was due to these mutations becoming dominate traits within the community.

Most species show signs of evolution during their fetal development cycles. Ordocian’s go a step further, however. Due to the development of a Tungsten laced gland within their body, the Ordocians can emit high frequency electromagnetic radiation through their bodies (in the form of X-rays) slicing their genetic code and allowing it to reform. This evolutionary gland is so precise that the Ordocians can attempt to evolve to beat a new challenge to the community, or even to reactive dormant survival mechanisms they need.

The lowest caste has the most complex genetic code, besides the “Queen”. These worker Ordocian are the first to attempt mutation whenever the community is in danger. Once a useful genetic mutation is discovered, that worker then breeds with the Queen, who can alter the genetic material given to her to create Mosaic species, usually a new caste of Ordocian. The new quality is then passed on to future generations of Workers, but the new caste is also used for as long as the community requires.

Other Species: The Ordocian have a driving goal “Multiply and Adapt”. Their survival mechanism can even allow them to absorb traits from other species into their colonies, though it is not common practice by a colony. It may even be that the Ordocian are made up of other species entirely.

When another species is encountered that possess a quality deemed worthy of the colony, a large number of the species is taken to a queen. Like much of the Ordocian “technology”, the actual genetic engineering is done by a biological function of the Queen. The Queen encases the subjects in a membranous pouch, creating a sort of suspended animation for the subject. The subjects then have genetic samples taken, mixed separately in an organ containing a variety of weak viral agents produced by the queen.

Once a strand is found that can pass the genetic barrier between the species, the Queen then biologically creates a retrovirus capable of rewriting the subjects genetic material enough to allow the Mosaic breeding, splicing out genetic material and growing the subject into a new caste. This new caste is then tested to see if it retains the genetic trait originally sought. If it is viable to the colony then the Queen translates the genetic material into the next generation of workers, and produces more of the caste to serve current needs.

Society: As stated previously, the Ordocian are a caste based “Superorganism” though they are not mindless. Many of the individuals vie for the honor of passing a new trait on to the colony. Competition between individuals is encouraged, as survival generates the best stock. Weakness is not accepted, and mutations that result in a negative trait are quickly purged from the colony.

That said the society is still community oriented before individual. Although they lack a true hive-mind, the Ordocian think and react as if they were in constant communication, as any Ordocian knows how another Ordocian will respond to a given situation, unless it is new.

Communication: Ordocian communicate through a low-level electromagnetic field, and a few chemical signals. They are also capable of speaking verbally due to cross-species breeding, but many do not utilize this trait as they consider it an inferior means of communication.

Technology: Most of the Ordocian Technology is also Ordocian, or at least related. It was created through a similar process to the Queen breeding for new traits, and is usually organic based. Most Ordocian technology is also caste specific, and develops as part of that caste’s “body”, just as humaniti develops regional bacteria to help digest food.

Castes -

Queen: The Queens of the Ordocian are massive in size, ranging from a hundred tons to the size of massive cities on the core worlds. The Queens are xenomorphic, usually encased in part of a stationary spot, like a city or even a starship. They have a multitude of highly sensitive tendrils, and a body covered in a chitinous exoskeleton with regions of exposed membranous sacs. Queens have a high degree of control over their bodies' biological processes, able to create viral agents for defense, custom morph zygotes for breeding and even exert enough control over their chemical reactions to survive the cold of space for decades without sustenance. Queens can produce all other castes, but the majority of their offspring are Workers. A new queen is not created until enough resources exist to split the community safely, at that point the new Queen is deposited in a safe location with enough genetic material to begin her own colony.

Depending on size, a Queens communication range to other members of her colony can range from one kilometer to hundreds of kilometers. Many queens develop higher advanced forms of electromagnetic communication as they age and grow. Any Queen can wreak havoc upon the radio communication systems of other species.

Workers: The Workers are the main strength of the Ordocian race. Generally speaking, there is twenty thousand workers to a single Queen, though this number does change depending on the environment the colony is in. Aboard a ship this ratio would be much smaller. The Workers are between 1.5 and 2.5 meters tall, depending on the colony. Their exoskeleton is softer than the queens, and they possess very complex multi-jointed digits on their hands to allow for the complex work they must sometimes do. The Worker caste has three sets of eyes, tucked behind a thick membrane on their egg shaped heads. One set can see about as well as a human, the next has a highly evolved telescoping vision, and the highest set can see into the IR spectrum. Workers are the base caste for evolution of the colony, see above.

Workers have a communication range of about fifty meters, though many develop a communication “bug” which can grant them longer range communications in burst transmission to their Queen.

Soldier: The soldiers are the expendable defenses of the colony. Larger and stronger than the worker caste, the soldier is between 2 and 3 meters in size, covered In a darker exoskeleton with ridges and spikes. Many soldiers develop additional tungsten glands within their bodies, which can produce dangerously high levels of radiation and electrical discharge. The soldier’s exoskeleton generally contains channels of a conductive metal found in the region of their development, usually copper or gold. This metal channels their electric discharges when they engage in combat in defense of the colony, while seeking a new resource or while capturing potential breeding stock. Some more advanced colonies are known to produce a Soldier that can wreak total havoc on electronic equipment, as they produce rapidly fluctuating electromagnetic waves that can even cause nausea and pain in humans. Unlike most Ordocians, Soldiers are the most likely to think on their own without orders, moving to intercept a threat or capture a resource they see is worth it. They are the eyes and ears of the Queen.

A soldier has a communication range similar to workers, but any lower caste automatically rebroadcasts any soldier communication sent to them, to alert the entire colony as quickly as possible.

Ordo-Ships: The ships bred by the Ordocians require a significant investment in resources, just like any starship. The first few generations of the Ordo-Ships were massive sleeper ships, where a pregnant Queen would go into hibernation and float through the quiet of space until her subconscious detected a useful resource of another lifeform. These ships have since been replaced by faster, jump capable starships.

The Ordo-Ships range in size depending on the colony, but unlike other species these ships can grow over time. The ships are massive organisms, in endosymbiosis with the colony, allowing the colony to exist inside of the ship to perform the life functions it requires. The ships are birthed from highly specialized birthing Queens, and constructed from materials on the base world that were able to develop into the ship. Because the resources of used in its construction vary from world to world, so to do the ships themselves vary between each other. Each ship generally hosts it’s own Queen, and many are reabsorbed by the Queen when the ship makes landfall, to be used to produce other necessities for the colony.

The drive systems are also semi-organic constructs, with high metallic organisms emitting controlled electromagnetic waves that allow the harnessing of hydrogen as a burning biofuel. One key difference between the ships of other species is that the Ordo-Ships are dangerously radioactive, which is fine for the Ordocians but not for many other organisms. Their jump signature is so large that no sensors could miss them jumping in, though many sensors and even computer systems scramble once they are subjected to the intense electromagnetic waves produced by the ship and Queen for communication.

Specialists: Many specialist castes are produced by the Queen when the need arises. Such as winged forms, highly armored or even more resistant to damage. These specialist castes are produced from exposure to other species or a challenge to the colony that requires an evolutionary advantage. Other specialists include the variety of Ordo-technology, from energy producing arm-growths that can be used for defense as well as welding to highly advanced micro-bugs that can crawl into a species brain and mimic electrical signals until a new species language can be translated (though these translation bugs tend to cause violent schizophrenic death to the target, they are very good at picking up useful information for a Queen.)

Each colony can have widely varied appearance, depending on how long they have been separated from the others and what they have encountered on their travels. All Ordocian tend to have exoskeletons, with multiples sensory organs and are very strongly motivated for survival.

So, kind of Pentapod-Borg-Ylii-ish, in a way?

The idea has been bouncing around my head for years. Looking up Pentapods, I assume this is in regards to the bio-tech? Yeah. Though the Borg angle is a lot less absorb your numbers, and more "absorb your evolutionary advantages".

I think they are very alien. Too many aliens are humanized.

Something that I wholeheartedly agree with.

My only belief suspender problem is the assimilation of Alien DNA. I can understand mimicking structures and attempting to replicate chemical innovation - but I find any genetic assimilation a little problematic.

Not so bad if you run a Star Trek "All life seeded by the same ancients who also had a humanoid body plan", or even the traditional traveller "The ancients seeded many worlds and had many attempts to create unique life". Neither of these seem terribly feasible to me however - especially for a heavy metal eating radio communicating radioactive terror bug. :)

From a scientific point of view it is basically a fluke that we have the DNA structure that we have - it is likely that humans would share more in common with any known archaea then any alien life, and even more likely would share significantly more in common with any of the eukaryotes.

The wikipedia entry on life has a relatively good grounding in this area.

Very cool! I need a new bad guy and I think I'll give these guys a try. I might have to keep them in a pocket universe though just to ensure they don't have too much of a head start taking over MTU.

I forsee my players mis-jumping soon and finding themselves in a realm dominated by Ordocians who welcome their new guests, if only long enough to copy their DNA and figure out how to break out into the TU. Maybe when they escape they will accidently carry an egg out of the Ordo universe, infecting the TU with a new and growing threat.

I like it but take it one step further the only way they are allowed to leave is if they take this egg with them to the OTU. Sort of PC blackmail causes the end of all life as we know it. OK that is a dirty trick but play as you like. These guys are really alien.
