MT UTP

I'm having a bit of trouble with the UTP description in the player and ref manuals.

Under Hasty Tasks it says "The task DMs are doubled before subtracting them from the time roll..."

under the UTP box at the top of the page it has Difficulty (2D) + DMs - Time (3D)

does this mean you actually roll 3 dice and subtract that from the roll you originally execute to achieve the difficulty target number?

its highly unclear and seems to be a bit insane...

just what is the procedure for rolling a task?

I had assumed for the UTP below:

To diagnose damage done to an air-raft
Routine, Gravitics, Edu, 15min, (uncertain)

a) roll 2D
b) add the DMs from your gravitics skill and Edu attribute
c) compare this number against 7 (routine)
d) roll 3D and multiply this by the 15mins to determine how long the task takes.

if i'm wrong can someone clearly explain it for me (just assume I'm stupid, it'd be easier that way for all of us ;)

Routine, Gravitics, Edu, 15min, (uncertain)
Step one: Calculate assets. We'll assume 1 from stat and 2 from skill for this exemplar. Thus DM is +3

Step 2 grab dice: 2 of one color (success dice) and 3 of another color (time dice)

Step 3: Success- if the sucess dice +3 total 7+, sucess, and 9+ execptional success.

Step 4: time- the time dice -3 quantity times 15minutes (TDiceRoll -3) * 15min

Now, exemplar for hasty:

task is thus changed only in step 3 and 4
Step 3H: if the success dice are 11+....

step 4: (timeDiceRoll -(2 * 3)) * 15...

aha.... thankyou very much for that.

the time roll still has a minimum of 3 right, even after you take away the skill + attribute DMs right? at least thats what the book is telling me...

cheers

Yup.

However, many MT Refs instead use the normal time roll, but halve the time factor, rather than doubling the DM for asset... a TNEism, for sure, but one that works well, and is faster for many.

To diagnose damage done to an air-raft
Routine, Gravitics, Edu, 15min, (uncertain)
Don't know if i've been doing this wrong all the time , but this is how I've always used the UTP

1 - tally up DMs (using above data) +1 stat +2 skill, total DM+3

2 - roll 2 dice and add DMs, target to roll over is 7+

Don't know if i've been doing this wrong all the time , but this is how I've always used the UTP

Example of task

1 - tally up DMs (using above data) +1 stat +2 skill, total DM+3
2 - sucsess roll 2 dice and add DMs (rolls of 5,5, plus DMs 3 = total 13)
3 - success on a total roll of 7+, 9+ for execptional success (above total roll of 13 is an execptional success).
4 - time roll 3 dice and subtract DMs (rolls of 2,3,2, minus DMs 3 = total 4)
5 - multiply result by quantity time (4 * 15min = 60min)

Now, example for hasty: :D
1 - tally up DMs (using above data) +1 stat +2 skill, total DM+3
2 - sucsess roll 2 dice and add DMs (rolls of 5,5, plus DMs 3 = total 13)
3 - task become difficult, success on a total roll of 11+, 13+ for execptional success (above total roll of 13 is still an execptional success).
4 - time roll 3 dice and subtract 2*DMs (rolls of 2,3,2, minus DMs 6 = total 1)
5 - multiply result by quantity time (1 * 15min = 15min)

Now, example of cautious:

1 - tally up DMs (using above data) +1 stat +2 skill, total DM+3
2 - sucsess roll 2 dice and add DMs (rolls of 5,5, plus DMs 3 = total 13)
3 - task become easy, success on a total roll of 3+, 5+ for execptional success (above total roll of 13 is still an execptional success).
4 - time roll 3 dice and add 2*DMs (rolls of 2,3,2, minus DMs 6 = total 13)
5 - multiply result by quantity time (13 * 15min = 195min [3hr and 15min])

Hasty and cautious can only be use when you need to roll the quantity time

In the hasty example, the limit of minimum time roll of 3 applies after mods. so your hasty would be 45min.but on an average roll set, 3+4+3, normal is 2 hours, hasty is 1:15, and cautious is 4hours...
