MT Spinward Marches Map

Hi all,

As an almost exclusive player/ref/collector of CT (with a small dash of MgT thrown in for good measure) I have just purchased the MT boxed set for the first time. I know I'm 26 years late to the party.

My brother insists that he had MT boxed set in the late 80s but I don't remember reading it myself.
I have the original Spinward Marches map in my CT Deluxe Box so I have a question:

Is the Spinward Marches map which is in the MT boxed set the same map as the one in the CT Deluxe Box?

If it is different in way, what changes have been made to it?

Thanks

Not quite the same - a couple small changes, but I don't remember exactly which. A couple borders have moved (look at the sword worlds).

If it's the "mid-war" map, then the main differences are:
  • The Sword Worlds are now split into the Sword Worlds and the Border Worlds.
  • The Entropic worlds have switched back into the hands of the Darrians.
  • The Federation of Arden has grown and is now formally recognised on the map.
  • The map displays a region indicating Vargr Invasions.
  • The map displays a region indicating Aslan Conquests.

Thanks. I was curious as I have no experience at all with MT or the Shattered Imperium.
My son has custody of my original Spinward Marches map from 1981 so once the MT box arrives in the post we are going to sit down and study both maps side by side.

MT has been my favorite system over the years (though I use it with the 'classic' setting rather than the Rebellion, personal choice). But unfortunately the production standards slipped a little ... be sure to get all the errata you can. Also, if you want to get into starship construction, it might seem a little confusing ... but there was a walk-through in one of the Digest magazines (I forget which issue) that was really helpful. The World Builder's Handbook and the Starship Operator's Manual are worth their weight in gold, and perhaps the alien modules for MT too. And if you are playing the Rebellion, then Hard Times and Survival Margin are also key to show how the second half goes (but be warned, you might find it upsetting).

Thanks Hemdian
I intended to try to collect the Digets issues 1 to 8 for the classic material but now that you mention the Mt stuff I can feel my inner Traveller addict pulling me in the direction of collecting the various MT supplements

Heck, the MT supplements by DGP really REALLY rock... There are 3 that are real "Must Have" items...

World Builder's Handbook: expands from a base of extended system generation and allows a lot more nifty details. It corresponds to the CT Grand Survey and Grand Census (both by DGP), and is missing a single table from that pair, but has also the detailed sensor rules for MT.

Starship Operator's Manual - a detailed discussion of ships and ship-technologies. Also adds additional detail mechanics for in-system travel, repairs, and things going wrong.

101 Vehicles - 101 vehicles, plus some missing tables from the craft design sequences.

Also really nifty:

Vilani and Vargr and Solomani and Aslan: despite being 2 to a book, the page count is higher than the CT alien modules, but the tone is the same, and character gen is upgraded to MT standards (more cascades, Special Duty). The promised third & fourth volumes (Zhodani and Droyne, Hivers and K'Kree) never materialized - one was in schematic stage when the plug got pulled.

The Flaming Eye - piracy in the shattered imperium. A note that the Flaming Eye is the Vilani equivalent to the terran Jolly Roger...

Thanks for the detailed info aramis.
Now I know that once I get my hands on the Core boxe set that it won't stop there and I will end up adding the supplements to my collection. :)

I don't see these listed on the contents of Marc Miller's MegaTraveller CD at the FFE website - I suppose bc they are from DGP rather than GDW. Can you recommend any good way to get these, other than just watching on eBay?

It's eBay, photocopies or pirate scans. So I advise eBay, because the other two are illegal.

The current rights holder is unreasonable.

I have purchased approximately 70 percent of my CT books from either Noble Knight, Wayne's Books or Troll & Toad. I know eBay can be cheaper especially if you are bidding but if you absolutely HAVE to get that book you need then that's the 3 sources I would choose.

So my MegaTraveller Boxed Set just arrived in the post.
My son and I are going to sit down over the weekend and have a good look at it.
We will also be comparing the 2 Spinward Marches maps.
Another plus is that the box contains the 'Errata & Clarifications: Spetember 1, 1990' so at least we have some errata.

The condition of this set is excellent considering it's age and the production value of the entire set is very good.

Looks like another Traveller-themed weekend for us.

See that the map it's not only SM, but the whole Deneb Domain, though in IE there's only UWP for the SM.

Also see that it is for Imperial Year 1120, while previous were for 1107-10 IIRC.

Sorry, but wrong. The map that ships is JUST the SM.

The DOmain of Deneb map is from MegaTraveller Journal, issue 1 IIRC. Which said issue also has all the UWPs.

When I bought my MT boxed set (back in the late 80's IIRC) the map that came with the IE was one of the whole Domain of Deneb, and no SM only map came with it...

I bought 4 different copies over the years. All came only with a Spinward Marches map.

My MT box came with the Spinward Marches map. Same map as the one with Deluxe Traveller box (on first glance). Very minor differences with reference to the political 'landscape'.

There is a double-sided photocopy-quality A4 sheet showing the Imperium but it is not so detailed and is in black & white only.

The box also still contains the GDW reply coupon. My son wanted to post it off but I told him he would be wasting his time (and a stamp).

My son has also claimed ownership of the boxed set. I'll have to have a sneaky browse through it while he is asleep ;)

Well, I have an A2 black map, that came folded in four as to be left as A4, labeled as Domain of Deneb circa 1120 that I'd swear it came within the IE with the boxed set of MT, and I don't have (or at least I cannot find and I don't recall ever having had) the SM map you talk about.

In any case, I bought my MT bosed set togethre with the Rebellion Sourcebook and Referee's Manual, and, as told, it was long ago, so I may well be wrong

If this Domain of Deneb map didn't cam with the boxed set, where did I obtan it?

MegaTraveller Journal. Issue 1, IIRC.
