I wanted another terrorist group to use as bad guys in my campaigns. Someone other than the Ine Givar. Thought I’d share:

The One Life Movement (OLM) is a loose affiliation of groups based on a common quasi-religious viewpoint: Everyone is born with an immortal soul which passes into the afterlife at the point of death. However, suspended animation (whether by cold berth, chill birth, or some other mechanism) is a form of death. Therefore a person travelling by low passage, for example, looses their soul when they are frozen and a soulless creature is revived at the other end. In other words the act of freezing someone in a cold berth is an act of murder.

There are degrees to which OLM supporters believes this. Many are just uncomfortable with the practice of cold berths and lobby their political representatives (on worlds that have such things) to impose restrictions in their jurisdictions (usually unsuccessfully). Some will hang around starports and startowns handing out leaflets. But there are a few who are more extremist. Acts of vandalism may be carried out that target cold berth manufacturers or hospital cryo-wards. Recently, doctors specialising in cryo-revival and their families have been harassed (and occasionally killed) by fringe OLM groups.

Some religious communities shun and ostracise those who have been through suspended animation, even holding funerals despite that person still walking around. They refer to such people as soulless monsters and abominations ... and suicide is sometimes encouraged as a ‘solution’.

Despite the widespread occurrence of OLM groups total membership is relatively small, and dangerous fringe groups are only a subset.

Here's one from my old PYRAMID writeup of Forboldn:

The Evolutionary Protection Army (EPA) is a radical environmentalist group which oppose any interference with what they call 'natural evolution'. They have been known to bomb desert reforrestation projects and rainforest logging operations at the same time.
My idea was that they could be used to oppose highly disparate projects on different worlds. I never did get around to using them anywhere else, though.

CLO - Citizens Liberation Organization, not to be confused with CPF (Citizens Popular Front) which occasionally cooperates with FCI - Front Citizens d'Imperia...etc.

MgT Agent gives a good set of ideas to deal with terrorists. While there would be no Imperium wide terrorist ideas there would be persuasive memes that would have many common roots on many worlds. And, I seem to be detecting the pattern that many of these terrorist groups do have their links with the Intelligence communities... But, whatever it is, the idea of a terrorist is closely linked to a notion of a network conspiracy. And, there must be tons of those in the Imperium.

The Jaquelites

a movment aimed at putting a decented of Empress Jaqueline I, last Empress before the Civil war, onto the Iridium Throne, on the basis that she was the last "legitimate" Empress, and all after her are pretenters. mostly active in the Core, minipulating certian nobles and civil servants to get thier people into positions to effect thier end goal. while Assassination is a tool theyhave used, they intend to take the throne with the consent of the Moot, after the death of the current emperor, and are attempting to "pack" the moot with thier supporters.

SNC (Society for Natural Conclusions) The SNC believes that the Imperim is too large and remote, Interstellar States should rise up from a natural local consensus, not be imposed from above, Trade and Defensive Pacts should form from those who they will immediately benefit not to serve some nebulous "grater good".

In truth the SNC is more a society for normalised conflict, the Imperim should keep out of everyone's business so Warlords and Petty Despots can rise up and wage merciless war upon each other, and those in power or ascendancy can impose their personal or ideological whims upon others, large trading concerns should be free to profiteer from the conflicts that arise and strike agreements with those in power.

Further, casting them as the bad guys is at best, bad form, and at worst, deeply offensive to members of those religions.

From my personal archives...... Don't mention "Betsy" around a few of the people who have played in my games....one or two still want this guys head on a pike...

BTSI :"Betsy, the Betsy"

BTSI is an acronym for "Beware the Shadow Inside" an inscription carved in stone near a colony that in a fit of mass paranoia destroyed itself leaving behind a manifesto for those who found the ruins of their colony.

machines, tool, and all written material were destroyed in a massive fire. Only a handful of bodies, were found at the site, most dead from self inflicted wounds, although two appeared to have killed in a ritualistic execution. the tow victims remains we found along the books, and data storage devices, which had been burned around the victims before the colony dispersed into the wilderness around the colony.

these words were carved into stone before every building before it was burned.

"It is our belief that all human Social, Political, and ethical constructs are the result of outside manipulation. The ancient people who created these constructs, and for untold generation manipulated human evolution for their own goal is beyond the ability of humans to purge.
Only by destroying all traces of our corrupted social, political, and ethical constructs, as well as the arts, sciences and technology created by these corrupted constructs, can humanity hope to free itself from the invisible chains that bind it.
All art, literature, music, science and technology must be purged from humanity, with no trace allowed to survive to begin the process of enslavement again. We have Begun the process here, we will cast off all traces of civilization, and trust in our minds, and bodies free from the chains of our shadow masters to begin anew.
Do not seek us out, take this warning back to your own worlds, and have the courage to follow our example. Beware the shadow inside.....

The Freighter that discovered the site reported back and The Scout Service sent several teams to search the planet for survivors a small group as spotted. These groups fled at the first sign of the rescue party, and several members of the rescue part were seriously injured by primitive spears, knives, and bows, the group had fashioned form local materials.

For several years the story of the colony was simply an urban legend until a group became obsessed with the story and began to actively campaign for their colony to reject all forms of technology, art, and science. the members of this group soon left their world and began to actively spread the message.
While most people discard them as cranks, and paranoid lunatics a surprising number of new converts have flocked to the message. Most simply form small communities, living with only basic tools, banning all music and art, and barring outsiders fro entry.
A few however have decided to take more direct action committing arson, vandalism, assault, and in some cases murder to destabilize local governments, destroy large collections of art, and music, or kill musician, artists, politicians, and scientists to disrupt the manipulation of human evolution by an unknown ancient race.

Werner Rorsche,BTSI Assassin
A former Intelligence agent who suffered a severe trauma while on duty and dismissed for medical reasons. Werner is a charming, attractive man, of slight build, and impeccable grooming. He was recruited by the BTSI after his accident, and is no a fanatical member the organization
He prefers to rely on his natural abilities, and training, but will use modern weapons, explosives, and other advanced technology in pursuit of his target. He justifies the use of technology, believing that using the Shadow Masters own weapons against them is permissible.
He often gets close to his target by pretending to be a service worker, or infiltrating the hotel, office, or facility the target is using. He will almost always gain employment using one of many false identities he acquired while in the intelligence services.
Once he has gained access to the target, he usually strikes quickly, and quietly' escaping before the body is discovered. he will not hesitate to kill any bodyguards, witnesses, or random bystanders to reach his target, and is currently wanted for bombing a shuttle killing two hundred people to remove one Jump Drive researcher.

Thank you, Aramis. It does get rather tiresome in science-fiction to continually have organized religion commonly depicted as one of, if not the, bad guys.

In a story that I am working on, one of the planet's problems is a small group opposed to any introduction of advanced technology. That would be a common basis for dissent in various forms, from mild to extreme. Do you really want to see your planet dependent upon technology that the planet cannot either maintain or repair? Eco-terrorists would be a subset of this.

Another possible terrorist group would be Psis that are no longer willing to accept having to hide their abilities and therefore working to take over a planetary government by whatever means necessary. The group also targets high-profile Anti-Psi officials for assassination, generally in as publicly and spectacularly a manner as possible.
