MetaPlot--Beyond the Ancients

The Imperium has barely scratched the true secrets of the Ancients. For them, there is only the scattered ruins of a few dozen worlds.

There are many possibilites for much older civilizations existing in the Alien realms outside of Imperial space. The Droyne may have been linked to Grandfather and the creation of the Imperial Campaign but I am a great fan of creating a milieu that deals with Antiquity (the time of the Ancients).

Marc suggested to me, at one time, this would be a combination Lensmen and HG. Wells The Shape of Things to Come with the Imperial Campaign thrown in for good measure.

The way this milieu was translated into real role playing action was each of Grandfather's children would have an entire sector of Chartered Space to "play" in. That is the resources of an entire sector to develop the most fantastic projects and push the limits of knowledge to beyond the current imaginings.

However, there were other beings also sharing this space...not only the Sparklers but the ancient enemy of the K'Kree. I always to TL G as the lower limit and thought how to explore what is the meaning of life when all want & depravation of the basic needs of a species had been removed.

One of my favorite authors is Jac McDevitt, and he seems to specialize in archaelogical type SF mysteries. In quite a few books, someone stumbles on some ruins of an ancient civilization and chaos ensues for one reason or another. I would highly recommend the books for ideas about how to set the stage and provide clues for such metaplots.

A good place to start is Engines of God which starts a series of books with the recurring character of Priscilla Hutchins (aka Hutch) who would be a good Scout character archetype.

Ron

PS: One of the reasons that I like his books is that characters die. There are characters who are important and are introduced, but he has no problems with killing them off as a result of poor choices. Fits with the "there are consequences to choices/actions" tone of Traveller. Another "good" feature is that not all of the questions get answered.
