Non OTU: Mercenary Companies

Chuck Anumia

SOC-14 1K
There are always tickets and projects for Mercenaries to work on.
Here is a list of some of the Mercenary outfits looking for work and members:

Band of the Red Hand
Caste of Assassins
Garad's Guardians
Targon's Toughs
Tight Hold
Steel Fist

Please add to the list if you know of other units

Also perhaps we could list more Mercenary tickets here?

I am assuming that you are not necessarily looking for units that appear in Traveller material.

There is an outfit called Ramwell's Raiders mentioned in the JTAS number 13. Also, if you have the Double Adventure, Chamax Plague and Horde, an outfit called Chamax Killers would be an obvious possibility, based on troops organized on Raschev to combat the Chamax, and who decide that the life of a mercenary is appealing.

From elite real world units that went by their leaders name, you have the following.

Darby's Rangers
Merrill's Marauders, aka the Galahad Force
Carlson's Raiders
Wingate's Chindits
Popski's Private Army

Some other historical units could be as follows.

Giovanni's Black Bands
Hawkwood's White Company
The Catalan Company
Cromwell's Ironsides
The Wild Geese

Then you have an entire novel devoted to interstellar mercenaries in Andre Norton's Star Guard.

It would also be entirely possible for a planet to hire out a portion of its military as mercenaries, similar to the actions of various German Princes during the American Revolution. That could give you quite a range of units, both surface and space units.

Hammer's Slammers

They are currently (circa 1103) based on Whanga/Regina IMTU where the local Vargr population has worked out an arrangement with them.

They are for hire but only in units of up to company strength.

The Dorsai, from the series of that name by Gordon R. Dickson.

If we allow for copyrighted material to be mentioned, there is also John Christian Falkenberg's Legion, probably operating mainly in the Solomani Rim area.

If I remember correctly, the Covenanters are also mercenaries in the Dorsai universe.

IMTU Mercenary Organisations

Following are some of the Mercenary sources from my traveller games. Some are sourced and expanded from official traveller sources and other traveller community sources online. Some are my own creations. Enjoy!
Megacorporations
1. Delgado Trading, LIC (Limited Imperial Corporation) – Military hardware, miniaturization, minerals, publishing, trading, recreational products.
Founded in 997 Delgado Trading LIC was known for arms manufacture within the Core Sector, but has expanded into areas such as mineral mining and refining widely across the Imperium. Delgado has interests in areas such as antiquities, and nanotechnology. Stock ownership: Imperial family—5%, Delgado family— 47%, Noble families— 27%, Private ownership- 21%
Delgado Trading LIC has enough military personnel in the Spinward Marches alone to dwarf many worlds’ militaries. Delgado Trading LIC finances mercenary outfits, particularly repatriation bonds.

2. InstellarmsMilitary hardware, military units, strategic planning.
Instellarms is a vast consortium and provides mercenary guilds on many worlds. Most main worlds have an Instellarms office attached to the starport. Instellarms is more likely to deal with governments than individuals. A subsidiary, Interstellar Ordinance specialises in disposing of army surplus equipment. Instellarms Security is a vast group of ex-miliary security personnel employed by the ‘corp to protect its interests and also available for security or mercenary operations.

3. BrokersMercenary trading and brokerage. This is the largest mercenary trading house in the Imperium. Brokers has offices on most worlds with a starport C or better and within 3 parsecs of an e-boat network. Brokers has access to literally 100’s of divisions of military and 1000’s of starships ranging from 10 ton fights to million ton tankers and fleet carriers.

Large Mercenary Groups
1. ComStarMercenaries guild company
Comstar competes with Instellarms in the lower technology market for both equipment and personnel for mercenary operations. Comstar has many offices across the Imperium and also finances repatriation bonds and loans for starships and military hardware.

2. The Hammermium Corporation a PMC headed by Count Kantee of Hammermium. Based on Hammermium in Trin’s Veil, this successful corporation operates a number of mercenary cruisers in the 600 to 1200 ton range. Hammermium Corporation has access to over 12,000 troops and around 40 starships, though rarely would all of these resources be on one world usually being spread across the Spinward Marches, Deneb and beyond the Imperium. The corp enjoys an excellent reputation in the mercenary arena. Additionally, the corp has several subsidized merchants plying the Spinward Main.

3. Blackhawk Enterprises, Inc. – specialises in military and security solutions especially in small scale operations. Blackhawk corp also manufactures military hardware on the low to mid tech area. Blackhawk also provides cadres for colonial military expansion.

Small Mercenary Corps
1. The Granite Brigade – a PMC comprised of two mechanized infantry battalions. Equipped to TL 10 and operating in the Spinward Marches.

2. Free Aerospace Company – FAC is a PMC operating a battery of high tech aerospace craft. The corp also supplies naval weaponry for starships on many starport shipyards. FAC also supplies ground troops specialised in starport security. They enjoy an excellent reputation across The Spinward Main.

3. Rifles Inc – a small PMC outfit in Battalion strength. Equipped to mid Imperial TL 8-10. Location: unknown(Source = Freelance Traveller, GURPS Star Mercs)

4. Libertas – a small space ship building corporation based on Mongo/Jewell but with offices on many worlds within the Jewell, Regina and Lunion subsectors. The corp has interests in speculative trade and freight transport but usually within system. Libertas has anti-Imperial leanings and is rumoured to have a small in-house PMC in platoon to company strength. (Source = unknown)

5. Suliman Security – a small PMC operating a single 800 ton mercenary cruiser with 4 squads of assault troops equipped to Imperial standard. Operating in the Lanth or Vilis Subsectors.

Had some players who wanted to run a Merc campaign so I created a foil for them in the form of a rival company with a lot more resources and a lot fewer scruples.

Trident Security Services was a group of ex-IM officers and senior enlisted, most of whom had been drummed out of the service for morally questionable or politically inconvenient activities. They had strong ties to other unsavory types in that sector including several minor nobles and megacorps that were operating outside of Imperial law. Whenever my players found themselves stymied, it was always linked to some Trident agent or covert ops group who managed to get there first and throw a wrench in their plans. The highest echelons of TSS were basically faceless suits and virtually untouchable by the players, making them a perfect reoccurring and increasingly aggravating villain.

The finale was a high rooftop shootout with a group of Tridents trying to assassinate a client of the PCs. The players knew the Trident commander from the beginning of the campaign and had actually saved his life during a bug hunt that went badly for both groups. The fight lasted the whole session and culminated with the Trident commander holding a gun to the head of the wounded client. One lucky shot later and the client was safe.

Then later, the players received a multi-million credit invoice from TSS corporate offices for security services and equipment replacement. It came with a hand written note attached saying, "Expedited remittance assigned to a third party".
