Megatraveller: What do I need to play??

tcabril

SOC-3
www.drivethrurpg.com has most of GDW's books available on PDF - pretty much what GDW had in its library when they went bankrupt (per drivethrurpg) and since I never played or read MegaTraveller I was wondering where I should start my collection.
I belive, at the least, I will need MegaTraveller Player's Manual and the MegaTraveller Referee's Manual.

But what else - just to get started?

Thanks.

I am a huge fan of Traveller and want to get as much access to the materials (regardless of version) as I can. I just plain love reading the stuff.

Thanks

The Imperial Encyclopedia is kind of cool for background material. That and the two volumes you mention comprised the original boxed set. I hear Hard Times is a keep, too, but I don't have that.

The original MT box set contained the Player's Book, The Ref's book and the Imperial Encyclopedia. I'd recommend that as a basic 'getchagoin.'

The Referee's Companion is a collection of rules and OTU material that didn't make it into the first three books. If you're looking for OTU background material then the Rebellion Sourcebook and Hard Times would be next on the list.

COAAC and Fighting Ships are not essential unless you have a compelling need for broken starship and aircraft stats.

Most of the adventure materials are pretty good with Knightfall and Arrival Vengance being my personal faves.

Enjoy!

The Digest Group Publications' Megatraveller Alien books are great, and although I think only two were produced, there were six slated to come out. The two I have are Solomani & Aslan: The Rimward Races, and Vilani & Vargr: The Coreward Races. Also known colloquially as: "Rats & Cats" and "Cogs and Dogs", respectively. The DGP Starship Operator's Manual to me is an almost must read, but I guess not needed to get started. You don't need to bother with the Rebellion Sourcebook if you aren't running the Rebellion Era and just use MegaTraveller for the system. But the Rebellion Sourcebook and Hard Times are good reads if you want to know "what really happens" before TNE.

Hope that helps,

Dameon

The CORE or it:
Players Manual
Referee's Manual
Referee's Companion*
Imperial Encyclopedia

Ref's companion finished out the rules materials. It also explains vehicular and large scale combat. It should have been in the basic box. You CAN play without it, but it's worth the $10.

Hard Times, COACC are not essential, but are nice to have.

Reb SB is only useful if you need ot know how the 1116-1125 setting is militarily organized.

Fighting ships is Drekh.

The adventures are worthy, but non-essential.

CT supplements are useful.
