Looking for Classic Traveller players for online game

ffilz

SOC-12
I've long been considering running some form of online Traveller campaign, using Google Hangouts, Roll20, or something else.

My thought is this is not a good time to start, but in the new year could be a very auspicious time to start.

So I'm wondering what sort of interest there would be in a once a week (or maybe every other week) game most likely Tuesday 7:30 PM Pacific Time to 10:30 or thereabouts. Key is it has to be after the kids bed time.

There is some evolving interest for play by post over on the odd74 and ruinsofmurkhill boards, for folks who might be interested.

PbP can be slow if there's not a lot of freedom on the DM and Player's to control the scene. Such things as combat and whatnot can drag on unless you impose a "post it or lost it" speed.

On the other hand, I prefer PbP for a small handful of personal reasons. I've been in one or another for the past several years and find them to be very enjoyable.

I've been playing in a PbP OD&D campaign for over 8 years, and have been running my own for over 3 years.

The ebb and flow, but with at least a couple dedicated players, they can be a lot of fun.

On the other hand, I also wish I could actually manage a face to face game. That just isn't realistic at this point, so the next best thing in my mind is something like Roll20 where we can still see and talk.

PbP with some occasional chatroom or such is acceptable. The scenario would have to grab my interest.

I have played in a 1eAD&D game with OpenRPG and a 2eAD&D game with Maptool - in both cases we used a "group voice program" (usually Ventrillo) to help things move faster.

The best experience I've had was when I moved here (northern Utah) from western Colorado - we had had an in-person 2eAD&D game going, but just before I moved another couple that were in the game moved to southwest Colorado. We had set up with them to "attend" via Skype - the camera on our end was aimed to show the game mat, and it was almost like they were there. After I moved I joined in via Skype, and it worked pretty well - no "tabletop program", just a real tabletop game and live video/audio conferencing capability.

And yes, for those of us "telegaming" we could have aimed our cameras at where we rolled our dice - but as I was just past 50y, and the couple were in their 60s, the DM (also in his 60s) trusted us to be honest about our rolls - and we saw no reason to mess things up by cheating on our rolls.

As to the scenario, here are my thoughts:

I will be using Classic Traveller 1981 Books 1-3 (with some text taken from 1977), though I am seriously considering the range band space combat from Starter Traveller.

I have been taking a lot of Christopher Kubasik's ideas (over here: https://talestoastound.wordpress.com/traveller-out-of-the-box/ also worked out on this forum under the id creativehum) to mind (and the other folks who have also been posting in the same vein), so reading his blog will be useful for getting a feel for where I cam coming from.

I have in progress, reasonably happy with, modified skill tables for Supplement 4 which I am open to discussion with players about.

Setting will be my own, currently working on a 2 subsector area somewhat inspired by the Seven Sisters and District-268 subsectors of the Spinward Marches that is at the frontier and beyond of "the imperium" (whatever that is...). The encounter tables and procedures in the books (and more tables I pull from other places or just flat out make up) provide a lot of implicit setting. I've posted a map here in this board.

My concept within the setting is that the PCs are mostly ex-military (with Merchants and Other thrown in of course, plus possibly the odd Supplement 4 career or two) all having mustered out on the same world, or having made their way there. I will leave it up to the players to add more definition as to why they know each other, but I think that should be a given (or if someone is unknown the the group, the players have primed things so we don't play the "we all meet in the bar and get into a fight). I'm assuming someone will muster out with a ship and the group has an interest in exploring the sandbox and figuring out what they can make of it (trade, trying to find a world to exploit, just wandering, whatever).

But it's a sandbox, and it's your game as much as mine, so ultimately we will work together and I hope something exciting will emerge from play.

As far as the scenario goes, it sounds pretty good. I'm not able to make the time though, as I'm already long asleep by the time you start. Hope it goes well for everyone! There's always room for more Traveller games.

The same scenario will also be available as a Play by Post, probably over at the odd74 boards.

Hehe...know any moderators over there? I was just reading the thread on high skills like Admin-5. Have to go to a meeting but I'm not sure I totally agree with high skills being bad. Now, I do agree that most tasks can be done okay if there's no time criticality.

Kind of a noob, but am casting feelers for a game to possibly join if you are still looking. I am usually free Tuesday evenings, every other week would be ideal. Not that I'm trying to dictate terms or anything, just saying.

I have played a very little Classic Trav. Love the game/setting.

I am a moderator over on odd74 (though just of the board for my OD&D game, and soon the Traveller game).

BTW, I have posted some stuff on the Classic Traveller community on Google+.

I'm starting to organize the game over on Google+ if you use that. Look for my post looking for players in the Classic Traveller community.

heh. found odd74, tried to navigate it. each click of the mouse locks up my machine for two minutes.

could run it here.

I've got critical mass over on odd74, so I'll be running there, don't want to commit to running more than one PbP at this point.

Wonder what's causing you issues on odd74 though...
