Laser artillery

Sounds like an oxymoron huh?

I guess cos we associate artillery with indirect fire and a laser is always going to be direct fire.

To the point!

We have laser weaponry at ship scale and we have laser rifles and carbines but the GunMaker in T5 doesn't appear to allow for crew served thru vehicle mounted lasers.

I've searched "laser" here on the T5 section of COTI and found one reference to this on the first few pages of the results and while it was mentioned, it wasn't addressed.

I've seen talk of designators doing damage so I tried that out, a Vheavy laser designator can do 6D of burn damage which is decent but no pen damage. Naming it a designator seems a bit off, OK, what's in a name huh?

Has this been discussed?

What was the consensus?

If not, is it just a matter of my getting over calling a laser cannon a designator and accepting that I can't have a gatling laser under T5?

I don't think it would be totally unreasonable to apply the long arm laser modifiers to a cannon.

On the other hand there's always very heavy titan laser rifles. Yes, I'm convinced heavy and light can apply to lasers it's a screwed up table entry.

I was thinking simply adding laser to the artillery category of Table 04 Weapon Descriptions on page 216.

I haven't thought so far ahead as to devise numbers yet.

Can anyone tell me why a laser does burn damage before pen? Especially given that Pen doubles the dice roll versus armour meaning if you're rolling burn first it isn't the most effective method of getting thru armour.

Of course, that could be the intent, that a laser will burn first, which does make sense now I've written it down!
