Psychology: They are arrogant and aloof from other cultures believing they were destined to rule the stars. They look down upon terrestrial sophont as mud people who interfere with their destiny. However they tolerated them because they perform vital services for their society. They frown upon any race that breaks their Covenant with the destiny.
Kendai do not change their eye color unless it is to impress upon another their emotions. This is rarely done within Kendai Society since there is an ingrained cooperation among their people. Outsiders who see this expression realize this is a warning of things to come.
Kendai take the words of other seriously. If a person or diplomat breaks their word they will never be trusted again. This goes back to their ingrained belief that cooperation is the key to survival. Failure to meet a commitment is a serious offense to them and will be dealt with harshly.
Government: Imperial. Their central government based on a parliamentary system. The emperor or empress holds the power to veto any law or decision made by the Grand Council. Planetary Lords or the ‘Sodai’ do not have a vote within the Grand Council. However they do have a voice in matters concerning the needs of the Kendai. One on one meeting usually performs this with the Kendai Lord that is in control of that area.
Society: Their society seems to evolve from the need to survive the rigors of prolonged space flight. Every member of society is seen as a necessary and integral part of the society. There is no animosity between the classes because of this.
The Kendai society uses a caste system. There are three castes: Nobility, Servant and Warrior.
The Nobility Caste form the central government based on a parliamentary system. The emperor or empress holds the power to veto any law or decision made by the Grand Council. Their rulers are seen as quasi-god like beings. They make up about two percent of the population.
Servant Caste performs the daily functions within their society, which pertain to their vast orbital cities and colony. They form the core of Kendai society making up sixty eight percent of the population.
Warrior Caste performs security and defense duties for their rulers. They are aggressive when it comes too defending the Covenant they have with their god. They make up thirty percent of the population.
Religion: Their religion is monotheist. They refer to this single god as the Mother of All or simply as the Goddess. The belief that the Goddess gave them right too rule the stars came into being sometime after they entered space. It is this belief that has made them a dominant power within their area of space. It is also the reason why they are so aloof from terrestrial life forms. Their belief system looks down upon newcomers to space as unworthy and unclean. They refer to planet with sophontic life as mud balls and their races as mud people.
The Covenant refers to the pact between the Kendai and their Goddess, a sort of manifest destiny that the Kendai have to controlling space to fulfill their religious beliefs and survival needs. The Covenant requires every spacefaring race pay a tribute to the Kendai for passage amongst the stars those who don’t suffer the wraith of the Kendai.
Military: The Kendai is a minority within their area of space. Therefore their ships are heavily armored, nimble and quite well defended. Opponents who have faced them usually come out on the losing end of the stick. Kendai warriors enjoy a challenge and will often engage larger forces but their ships are quite capable of handing them. They are able tactician and have the ability to amass force quite rapidly.
They do not deploy ground forces using instead the threat of planetary bombardment to subjugate any races they may encounter. They will invade a system with a large force and blockade a planet until it surrenders or if they are met with force they will literary bomb the planet back to the Stone Age. This act alone has made them fear by the surrounding interstellar communities. However this is an act of aggression used only as a last resort.
Kendai Warriors follow a code of conduct, which evolve around their religious beliefs. Defense of the Covenant is their primary concern. However they are not willing to take on the major powers in the region seeing this as a sound tactical judgment considering the size of their interstellar navies. However, if one of these states became the aggressor, they will defend their territory with a passion. Self-sacrifice for the whole of the Kendai is not above their duties as warriors. Lone ships out gunned and out numbered have been known to fight to the bitter end.
