Is it out?

T5's release has become something of a multi year running joke, so I'm confused a bit here when people say they've got it. Is it available, yes or no?

What Hans means is (as I understand it) that there is a CD-ROM chock-a-block full of T5 in raw files form available from Far Future Enterprises (iirc), aka Marc Miller, at www.farfuture.net for $35 plus shipping. These are more development files of the early material than final ready to play fully playtested and edited.

With that comes access to the playtest forums on this site where things are being hashed out, and updates to the material on the CD-ROM as it develops.

And if I am not mistaken when it is published you get that too. But it's been ages since I looked into it and things may have changed or I may be misremebering. It may even be closed by this time.

One of those closer to the subject or more up to date on it should be along to straighten me out shortly :)

What Hans said.

And what Dan said is right.

But I'll tell you, the CD is out-dated already; the playtest forum has a lot of updated, errata-fixed files, and Marc is slogging thru starship design.

So you could get the latest stuff, and it is indeed chock-a-block, but it's not complete yet.

make this Sticky?

I just got my copy today

Even if I am not the one that made the post I must thanks you. It is usefull to know that it is already outdated, I will check the errata before getting all worked up.

Thanks

So What Now?

I bought the original release of T5 18+ months ago (I think) it was just coming out at the time. It was understood that there were a lot of gaps in the mechanics and rules. If we bought the original release, do we get the updates for free. I can't find anything on the FFE site that states anything like that or allows me to download the updates.

Anyone have information on this? :D

RixRacer, you should have gotten an invite to the special T5 forum here on CotI for purchasing. If not DonM can get you in. Drop him a PM (click the name back there) through CotI. That's where the updates and more reside as I understand it.

Actually, this year's April Fools joke was the announcement of a coupon for Drivetrhoughrpg that would give the lucky person the entire Traveller canon. I want Traveller 8 more than I want Traveller 5...so hopefully Marc can slip the manuscript into Mongoose's production schedule.

Ok so I just bought the current Mongoose eddition at amazon.com (this one: http://www.amazon.com/Traveller-Core-Rulebook-Gareth-Hanrahan/dp/190610333X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295154754&sr=8-1 ) my question is will Traveller5 be much differant than that or just an improvement?

They are different, yes. Different rules, and slightly different emphases.

T5 takes more of a toolkit approach, I think. As such I can design guns, armor, and vehicles for Mongoose Traveller using T5's rules and a damage conversion table.

Extremely different.

T5 is as different from MGT as it is from CT; sure you can port stuff, but it's not really the same game at all.

Character skills are scaled differently; you'll get 2x-3x as many levels.

Gear is extremely gearheaded in T5.
Tech scale is slightly different, but lots more "off the charts" stuff shows up on the tables.

World and system generation is not that much different.

Ship design is vaguely comparable, being built on the same assumptions, but the detail level of T5 is several needless notches higher.

Amazingly cool, I can't wait untill the final version is out and in stores I'll be preordering it fo'sho :p I'll be playing around with the MGT and getting into the Traveller fiction untill then. Any eta on its release or is it still kinda a hazy "when its done" kinda date?

Hmmm I wonder how much T5 is being changed just because it can be. There was little wrong with the original Traveller (and a lot right) dont see any reason to buy yet another completely new version roughly based on it, but essentially being a completely new game. I like Traveller the way it is, I dont want to play anything else. I am not interested in what I hear about T5 at all same as I dont really like Mongoose Traveller all that much either, it pretty much ruins everything Traveller stands for.

Personally, I never bought any of the other versions (MT, TNE, GURPS, T20, Mong, MMT), because I was happy with the original.

But, in part because it looks like Marc is improving and refining a lot of what made CT great, and then putting it all in one package. And in part because, honestly, Traveller has given me so many years and hours of enjoyment for a relatively small price, and since I can afford it, to support Marc so he can continue to serve the greater community by doing what he loves anyway.

I am sure it will get used.
