GURPS Ogre

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
I was casually cruising some sites last night and came across the old GURPS Ogre publication.

Just out of curiosity, anybody ever get inspired to shove one of those behemoths into their campaign?

I bet it made for an interesting game.

It's self consistent, but not fully consistent with extant OGRE line fluff, specifically, it lacks the micro-nuke infantry weapons.

It was the last GURPS book I bought with intent to Run, and it was sufficiently different from the rest of the line that it turned me off.

Haven't used Ogres perse, but I have used Berzerkers (ala Fred Saberhagen et al) of all sizes, stripes, etc. in a lot of my earlier campaigns, some of them with a lot of Ogre-like qualities.

A striker campaign that had lasted several months was derailed by an Ogre type equivalent that was track disabled by a single land mine and the ensuing arguments!

Those were the days

Oh heck yeah....I was talking to Far-Trader about it in this thread:

Also, there's an Amber Zone in JTAS #6 called "Loggerheads" about players being hired to deal with a runaway logging machine that's actually a testbed for an Ogre/BOLO type prototype.

Only problem with having BOLO?Ogres is that everyone I used to play with would have recognized them from playing Ogre and GEV with me! So there'd be no way to get them within 100 planetary diameters of one of the things.

But I used GEV to resolve small battles the players would be involved in - their vehicle would be one from Striker and handled with those rules when fighting, but the rest of the battle would be abstracted with the generic counters. The one time a Mk-V came rolling out of an estuary towards the players' side they cried foul and threatened to quit.

I tried to build an Ogre with Striker once - nearly went insane and the thing's ground pressure was so high (even with 15' wide tracks!) I had to add grav plates to lighten it up enough that it could move without sinking into up to the axles.

Main armament was a ship-sized fusion gun, missile racks, VRFGG's, det-blocks for anti-personnel, autocannon firing collapsing rounds, pulse gatling lasers for point defense. I don't remember how much armor it had or the power plant's size, but I'm sure it could have lit up all of New York with juice to spare. And you could have crashed a Scoutship into it and probably only scratched the paint.

I do recall it's number was BAT-666. "Abandon All Hope" was painted on the side with a big reaper pic on the front glacis. I was like 18, waddya want?

we were about 16-18 too when everything bigger seemed better and I remember the designer having the same issues with ground pressure. Then he hit the opponents mine and the rules were too simplified and a single mine hit destroyed a track that was miles long and wide.............no spare links either! Ii can recall for armaments he opted for many, many, multiple turrets. Wish I still had the design even just for nostalgia

I have a sketch of one of mine somewhere around here....but I'm sure the wince factor is sky-high.

I seem to recall DGP's "Wogs and Dogs" mentions an ancient Vilani automated war machine hidden away somewhere. That just shouts GURPS Ogre to me. Unfortunately, I don't own a copy.
