[GT,T5] Questions about Imperial nobility and Saarinen (Deneb 0113)

Hi, I am currently writing up Saarinen (Deneb 0113) for JTAS - mainly for GT, but with other versions in mind, so I am including the extended info found in Second Survey. I have a couple of questions.

Q1: First, according to GT: Nobles (for example), the lowest noble rank that can represent a world is Baron. According to the Second Survey data, Saarinen has the ranking noble as a Knight. What's the best way to reconcile this? I don't really want to "fork" the data if I can possibly help it. Would it make any sense to have a Knight as the local "agent" of an offworld Baron? And would that explanation work for the many other times this may crop up?

Q2: Which Duchy covers Saarinen? I don't have Deneb Sector yet (got to raise some funds first!) but would like to include the information for completeness.

Actually, that raises a third question:

Q3: Any good reviews of Deneb Sector? I've read one, which was favourable, but would like to at least hear some other opinions.

TIA,

John

A1: As far as T5 is concerned, Knight do get land grants on their homeworld. And they don't have a vote in the Moot. So I guess the world itself is not represented. Or it is represented by a neighboring Baron until it becomes more important. (Just my guess.)

. . .According to the Second Survey data, Saarinen has the ranking noble as a Knight. . .
That seems to be a common misconception. What the Second Survey data is telling you is that on that planet there is a knight acting as Imperial representative. It is quite possible that there are other nobles living on the planet but who are not acting as Imperial representatives, so the knight is hardly the 'ranking noble'.

Additionally, as I understand it, the knight is a representative to the planet and not for the planet. He is, in essence, the Imperial ambassador to the planet.

The neighbouring Baron seems likely - every world should have representation!

It's confusing, because T5 refers to the column as "ranking noble" (p.436)! And if you were going to list one, why wouldn't it be the ranking one? Except of course, it can't be now I think of it, because there's often more than one listed...

Doesn't it run two ways? Doesn't he represent the planet to the Imperium and the planet to the Imperium?

Thanks,

John

If it is a colony or an outpost it does have representation; the owning member world's noble!

I don't think we've been told just what his function has been retconned to in T5, but in previous versions he's part of a backup control system, a secondary set of reins. The primary Imperial contact with the member worlds is done by the Imperial bureaucracy (supervised by the subsector dukes) in the form of legates and consuls. The high nobles function like a sort of ombudsmen. They can step in and supersede the ordinary bureaucracy if it proves inadequate or corrupt. But they had better be able to justify their interference after the dust has settled.

Hi,

There are 2 major worlds Magash and Thengin, the Duke of Sabine has no Counts, so has to rely on Marquis Dhapura.

I liked the section on small ship wars between the rival duchies, the chapter could have been called Billion Cr Squadron. There are several alien races detailed and a cut down Sector Fleet for Deneb, Sabine has the strongest fleet with 8 black globe Battleships.

Given the constant little wars in Denb sector I'm beginning to understand how there could be a rebellion and suspect why the Imperial Capital units are
kept busy at home.

Kind Regards

David
