GRIP for Traveller - XP Issues

Valarian

SOC-14 1K
I've recently purchased GRIP after the tip on this forum that it was selling cheap in Hull. I've installed the main program, but I'm having problems with installing the Traveller Rules Compendium. The installer keeps hanging trying to put arial.ttf in to C:\Windows\Fonts. The problem being that this font is locked as it's used by the system. I've tried disabling firewall / anti-virus software etc.

Does anyone know of any issues on XP Professional?
Does anyone know of a workaround?
Help! :D

I've never had a problem with the install, then I'm using W2k...

Are you installing from the Trav edition disc using auto run?

Try going to the disc and installing trav_setup.exe from the GRIP Traveller Tools folder

Let me know how it goes

Perhaps try removing that font from your C:\Windows\Fonts folder prior to installation...

Or uninstall and install the compnents in a different order ?!? Very strange

GRiP download edition is running well for me under XP Pro. I passed on the Traveller edition after being loaned a copy and having concluded that existing freeware works as well or better.

That said, it didn't lock up on my test install via trav_setup. An alternative to swapping out your current ariel.ttf for the install is to use Unlocker to release XP's software lock on the TTF. I've found this wee tool handy for finicky installs, though once again Trav_Setup wasn't one of them IME.

I've just tried installing the Compendium with the system in Safe Mode. This has worked and I've got it installed and running. I'd already tried removing the font, which is how I found out is was locked during the service/system startup.

Only problem so far is a runtime error trying to double click on a world in the Astrography area. The world stats appear briefy then the program errors.

At £10 + p&p for the package - I can't complain.

Thanks for the help. Appreciated.

Be really careful with the Traveller material, especially during a GRiP session. It is buggy in the extreme and will bring your game to a screeeching halt, with no warning. (In fact I would recommend grabbing any material you think you might need from there before opening IGM and putting it in another format.)
