Grenade Difficulty

Why are grenades to freakin' hard to hit anyone with?

In the Players Manual you need a Formidable roll (15+) to throw a grenade accurately at medium range (5-50m). This can't be right surely?

I must be using the wrong table, otherise you have to get real close to have a chance of hitting someone with a grenade, but then of course you are caught up in the blast as well which rather defeats the point of the exervcise :D

As an aside, what scatter rules would you recommend for missed grande throws?

I think it's a range band compromise. I'd have trouble throwing a grenade 50m, never mind hitting anything with it. On the other hand, you'd probably want to throw it a bit further than 5m. :eek:

That Formidable is probably based on the outer edge of that range (50m). I wouldn't expect most folks to be able to hit a "target" at more than 20m in most cases.

A 1d6 roll works handily if you are using hexes for combat. Some relationship to how badly the roll is missed would indicate distance.

My Traveller experience with grenades was limited to one experience with a nuclear grenade - pushed out the aft airlock while we headed for orbit. Since our intent was not to hit anything (just to get it out of the ship!), we didn't really roll.... We had some very pissed people after us for a while.

The Formidable roll is for hitting somebody with the grenade directly (between the eyes)


Usually I use a task role to see if anything goes badly wrong for the thrower (mishap, pin thrown away, grenade stays in hand...)

Thanks for the replies so far, and it would seem most ppl have limited use with grenades.

However when you consider their penetration can be way in excess of most weapons, my players are keen to throw them about, and it still seems next to impossible to hit anyone with a damned grenade, or come to think of it an arrow or axe either!!!

I checked this.
According the players manual hand grenade attacks can be treated as indirect fire attacks, using the task:
Difficult, FwdObserver, 1 CR (fateful, unskilled ok)

Well, I would perhaps allow an additional DEX/STR DM.
Guess thats better.
