I found an old writeup I used for the IN and wanted to share. Definitely not canon, but fun nonetheless.

# The Imperium Navy
There is no older service in the Third Imperium than the Navy. Not only do they provide defense, but as the protectors of the engines of commerce.
## The Fleet
When citizens think of the IN they are talking about the Fleet. The Imperium has over 11,000 worlds and trillions of sophonts, with over 120,000 ships. The primary organization designation is the sector fleet, although subsector fleets are a far more common in deployments. There are task groups and assault groups deployed for specific missions. Approximately 50% of the fleet are active duty while 40% are in reserve. The remaining 10% are the Capital Fleet, under the “direct” control of the Emperor and heirs.
## The Corps
As in other points in the History of Humaniti the Marines are technically a department of the Navy. Their mission is to fight in concert with the Fleet in suppression and assault roles. Commonly marines are not occupiers. Planetary security and occupation is more commonly handled by the Imperium Army.
## The Tech
The Imperium Navy Technical Services is the primary disseminator of technology. Not only can Imperium warships be constructed up to TL15, Naval bases spread throughout the Imperium provide technological support for the surrounding areas.
Technical Services isn’t just repairs and maintenance; it is research, development, and emergency services. Although the majority of Tech service members are deployed on bases, there are units and departments commonly attached at the fleet level.
## The Scouts
Like the Marines, the Scouts though viewed as an independent service are another department of the Navy. Scouts have a similar number of active duty ships as the rest of the Fleet. However the tonnage is a fraction of the weight of the Fleet. they are much smaller craft and commonly deployed in much smaller units. The Boat network is nearly 40,000 ships and tenders. Roughly half of the Scout ships in the Imperium are deployed on reserve to retired service people as a surreptitious or at least inobvious intelligence assets. The most common is the Type S “Sulieman” but hundreds of variants and different models exist.
## Naval Intelligence
The Naval Intelligence apparatus is integrated at every level of the organization much like the Tech, but offers more than just wartime tools and surveillance. There is significant overlap and cross training with the Marines, Tech, and the Scout Service as well.
