Early stages of Vargr uplift

Stupid Question:
I've been looking thru V&V and while there is a Vargr language section I have yet to find an answer to this question. Can a Vargr speak "galanglic" or any other human language?

I assume they can learn to understand spoken "english", but can they speak it, or is it only "barks and yap's"?

I don't any of the alien modules specifically state that any of the races speak English/Ganglic, but it's certainly implied. I would think Vargr near the Imperium would speak it, but those further into the extents probably wouldn't, and would probably have local dialects for whatever Vargr language is dominant.

I think it's heavily implied that the Vargr and Aslan can and do. If you're willing to take Research Station Gamma at face value, chirpers can and so Droyne should be able to as well.

also, one must remeber that cheap, accurate translators are quite common, and so the pyhsical need to learn another tongue is less. in MgT, at least, for something like 1000Cr, you can get a TL10 comm with translator 1, which is pretty much real time and able to understand shades of meaning.

thus, it is entirely possible for a alien who is biologically incapable of speaking Anglic to function quite well in the imperium.

that said, however, As far as i know, the alsan and vargr can both speak anglic if they are taught it.

Ive always assumed in my games that aliens in regular contact with Imperials can understand and speak galanglic reasonably well.
since they've had several thousand years to get used to it, most people on nearby worlds can manage an elementary school level vocabulary

however out on the streets, language skills are needed to avoid literal problems (excuse me, I need a toilet .... my brother is a good plumber) and social skills are needed so jokes are appreciated and you dont phrase something in an offensive way.

both of these are problems Ive regularly encountered working in a multinational outsoured company. Just because the people I deal with are well versed in englishc hasnt stopped me having to smooth over serious communication issues encountered by my co-workers

accents though are common irritants and causes for confusion, usually worth a task modifier or perhaps sneaking in an "ah ha thats what he meant !" moment when they get sidetracked

Ever readed a book translated with an auto translator?

You may argue that technology will ofset that, but in this cse the problem is not as much a tech problem as is the multiple use some words (or phrases) may have in any language.

When one newspaper began to have a Catalan edition of a newspaper writen in Spanish and used an auto translator, there were some amusing things, as translating family names, so that Ana Botella (the wife of José M Aznar, then president of Spanish goverment) becoming Ana Ampolla (in english would have been Ana Bottle), or Rodrigo Rato (them minister of economy) becoming Roderic Estona (Rodrigo While in english). Even now (about 14 years after), sometimes it happens yet...

Proto-Vargr

All kidding aside, Vilani & Vargr mentions the existence of a few Vargr subspecies and a DGP Four Knights adventure set on Antiquity finds an "improved" Vargr(1) in a stasis box of sorts.

Apparently there are a few versions of Vargr out there so it might be fun to try describing a few.

1 - The improved version had six fingers and, IIRC, no tail.

I Seem to recall

That somewhere early on, probably the little black books that anglic was the universal language of of commerce within the Imperium and that all sophants spoke it. That was always something I recalled as explicitly stated from my very earliest days playing.

May be just my bad memory, but it was 15 years or more before I owned anything but the lbb books 4 and 5 the first couple of supplements. The first Jtas where all ready long out of print when I started trying to find them.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled cat singing....
Next up fluffy from Cleavland sings Jumping Jack Flash...

Yes, Mr. Tek, there is. Galanglic.

Likely as not, it's the primary glue holding the imperium together, and as noted in Terry McInnes' Languages in Traveller article (JTAS 16 and Best of JTAS 4)...

LANGUAGES OF THE IMPERIUM
Galanglic, a dialect of Anglic, is the official language of the Imperium. This tongue, which corresponds in many ways to today's general American dialect, is usually widely spoken as a first language only by the general population of major worlds on communications and trade routes.
On other worlds, Galanglic will be spoken to a lesser degree by the local population as a second language. Their first language will either be a different anglic dialect or a totally foreign language. In any case, the more isolated a given world is from trade and communications routes, the more difficult it will be for a visiting adventurer to understand the planet's dominant language. Likewise, the locals will have greater difficulty understanding the adventurers - compounded by the provincial suspicion some isolated societies have for outsiders.

Yes, Mr. Tek, there is. Galanglic.

And there are dialects within it.
The Imperium has not been able to prevent the emergence of a variety of Anglic dialects. Interstellar communications, holcrystals, and recordings help to spread a uniform pronounciation of Anglic througout the Imperium. Within the Imperium, any Anglic speaker can understand almost any other, but isolated communities on worlds with little contact with the interstellar trade lanes shift their speech patterns to form dialects. Broad areas in the Imperium have established their own pronunciation patterns. Accepted dialects include Rim (which includes Terra ( Sol / Solomani Rim 1827)), Core (in the central region of the Imperium), Riftian (at the spinward frontiers), and Transform (in the Antares region.)

Anglic is sometimes called Galanglic (for Galactic Anglic).
