Do grav sleds make noise??

xdiox

SOC-9
My apologies if this has already been done. I was wondering what if any noise a grav sled makes when it is approaching you??

I've never come across any official rules on it.
When it's been an issue, I assumed that they were basically silent.

How fast is it approaching?

What TL was it built at?

What is its power source?

How much stealth has been built into the engine and/or the hull?

CT grav vehicles just hum. Probably quieter than the wind noise. So hovering, hhhmmmmm. Travelling at 100 km/hr, Whoosh. Up to 1,000 km/hr, WHOOSH. Over 1,200 km/hr CRACK WHOOSH.

Some versions (TNE?) use jet engines, which will whine.

That depends on the range of the weapon mounted on the grav vehicle. If sufficiently long, it would be totally silent.... :D

....also when they're on the FRITZ!!!

sorry, Fritz88, i couldn't resist...

I had always thought that grav modules hummed. The hum being lounder at low tech levels, and almost gone at TL15.

Cheers
Richard

Thanks for the input..
Situation would be a TL9 open top air raft coming up behind a humvee. It would be coming in at low altitude, not up to max speed yet(maybe 90kph). Would it be audible over the humvee's engine, if it were running at say 95kph(normal internal combustion gasoline engine) with an open top.

I wouldn't think so. Normal road noise plus the engine noise of the hummer should mask the air/raft in that circumstance.

Road noise inside or outside the vechile. My friends truck is quiet when we inside going to lunch. But it is LOUD when he pulls in in the morning.

Both.
Try this, or simply picture it.
Drive down the road with the windows up, then roll down the window. The difference you hear is the amount the truck cab reduces the sound level.
Then try to hear the sound of a vehicle behind you. Unless it's very loud, you're probably going to have a hard time picking it out of the other noise.
Sound can be directional, too. And things like canyons (natural or urban) can distort sound in strange ways. Given the majority opinion of a low hum, they're going to have a hard time singling out an air/raft from the other noise.
There's always the rear-view mirror, though. ;)

You would be hard-pressed to hear an Abrams MBT coming up behind a HMMV until it gets really close. Even a large pick-up on a tank trail makes plenty of noise that will cover up other activities. (And, all the nice insulation that reduces that noise in the vehicle, also makes it hard to hear other vehicles (hat tip: Piper) - even emergency vehicles with their sirens going!)

I don't know how the sound of an Abrams' gas turbine compares to a Challenger's diesel, but you certainly know when the latter is trying to sneak up on you...
