Converting plaser to mining laser

JAFARR

SOC-14 1K
Does anyone know if there is or has been a case of converting a pulse laser into a mining laser? Or is there a srtaight out ship mounted mining laser in existance within the Traveller canon?

check the belter article in Best of JTAS 1, and the Beltstrike module.

I do believe both are true, but my knee hurts WAY too much to check.

CT, Supplement 7 Traders and Gunboats, page 27, Seeker (100dton Scout converted for prospecting duties):

"The dual turret is fitted with a single pulse laser for use as a mining cutter."

The Belter article mentioned above makes no mention of equipment needed other than a ship "of any type" and a vacc suit.

Though some wail about any of the GURPS Traveller material being considered canon, GT Starships has stats for "mining lasers" as opposed to regular ship-mounted lasers. They're rated at about 10-20% of the power per shot, the damage roughly corresponds to that ratio, and they are MUCH shorter-ranged than standard lasers. However, they have a drastically higher rate of fire, and they're energy hogs. Cost is comparable with standard lasers, and you can only fit one to a turret.

They do make nifty point-defense weapons. :)

And of course T20 also has mining lasers in the design rules. Lower power, cheaper, shorter range, marginally useful as combat weapons.

I built a laser from Striker and put it in a turret - but I create quite a few 'ground-attack' turrets incorporating Striker weapons. They're all zero-rated for space combat.
