CE Space Combat Question

Fayoumi

SOC-2
Hello everyone!
I have a quick question about space combat within the Cepheus Engine.

Step 3 in the space combat checklist mentions adding a dexterity modifier to the initiative roll. Should this be the pilot's dexterity?

I'm very sorry if this has been asked before.

I'm no expert on CE, but I would suspect it is just a mistaken copy from Personal Combat (p89), as spacecraft initiative is generally 2D + bonus for Thrust.

If anything, I would use the Captain's DEX modifier. On a small ship that might very well be the Pilot.

Okay cool! Thank you for the reply. I've heard a lot of great things about your Clement Sector setting and I'm hoping to pick it up soon!
I'm also very confused about movement in CE's space combat system. In the old SRD there was a specific manoeuvre phase used to close or open the range with another ship. Nothing like that is mentioned in Cepheus Engine. At least nothing that I can find.
I know that the pilot can adjust the speed of the ship but I'm not sure how to use that without some pretty time-consuming mathematics.
I see that the navigator can use an action called Range Check that will allow the vessel to increase or decrease the range between ships but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me so I worry that I'm misunderstanding some fundamental aspect of this space combat system.
Would any of you know of a good youtube campaign, or something similar, I could watch? I'm thinking something like that would help me out quite a bit.

Nevermind! I think it's beginning to click with me. I'm not sure why but I wasn't thinking that you can treat the movement just like it's explained in the interplanetary travel section. I guess that's probably the "fundamental aspect" I felt like I wasn't understanding. I apologize, I'm very new to this.
Is that how you guys play out space combat?
