Can characters in T5 have multiple careers?

I recently purchased Traveller5 as a curiosity and started to play with some of its character creation when I got my CD in the post, however, I do have a question:

I might just be missing something here, But it seems like when a character fails thier continue check, they automatically muster out and start adventuring, which seems a little odd to me. Is this the case or am I missing something?

Yes, they can have multiple careers. In fact, the Craftsman and Functionary careers can only be had after exiting a different career.

If you fail the roll to continue, you muster out, but only from that career. You may then move on to another, or start adventuring. Age begins to take a toll, however, at the end of the 4th term, so there's an advantage to exiting career tracks earlier than that.

Aging.

More technically correct, Aging begins at Age 34 for Humans. Wether you turn 34 in your 4th Term is a different matter, for instance if you have one or more Pre-Career Terms of Education. You could start the Term at Age 30 and end that 1st Career Term making Aging checks. Basically it the Age, not Term that matters.

Good point. And, I think there's even a different specific age for some sophonts, based on life-stages. But, I haven't been able to study that material enough yet to remember.

Changing Careers, in the "Master Text Old" only

On the T5 CD-ROM they offer a preliminary draft of the book; the file name is "T5 Master Text Old.pdf" There was a page with a table and suggestions entitled "Changing Careers". I don't see a PRINTED page-number but it is between "Educational Institutions" and "Aging". (page 93 of the .pdf) They seem to be phrased as loose suggestions. The table handles changing from any one career to any other, and the consequences.

This page did not make its way into the final book but probably holds what you want.

Two other things that didn't get to the final book, but should have, were the table on Small Craft, and the chapter defining the types of Terrain.

You can get the errata version 0.71 in the front of the Errata thread, if you want to "edit" your .pdf . Also the farfuture.net site has extra downloads for "1001 GunMaker Guns" and "1001 ArmorMaker Armors":
