Beowulf Free Trader, Step 10: Crew

We decide to allocate space for four crew members (pp. 329, 346). Room for four crew, at 5 tons per crew member, takes 20 tons. That works out to, more or less:

4 standard staterooms, 8t, MCr 0.4
2 common freshers, 2t, MCr 2
Common area, 10t, no cost

NOTE That's MCr 2.4 for 20 tons of crew accommodations. In Classic Traveller, that would be 4 staterooms (2 ton room + 2 tons common) = 16 tons, at MCr 0.5 per stateroom, totalling MCr 2. If I needed crew space in a hurry, I could use the CT rule, and results would be close. A slightly more accurate estimate would be 5 tons per person at MCr 0.5 per person.

Those estimates are in a hurry, mind you, and not correct if you were going to publish it in a supplement.

did you pick 5 tons/crew member because that's a general rule of thumb you've used to keep crew from "going insane" with lack of space, or was there a reference to 5 tones/crew member that I missed somewhere?
 
Good catch. It's the value I worked out for sanity purposes; I had to figure it out. That's going to go in the suggested errata pile...

I thought it was best for 10 tons per crewmenber.

Using the Comfort and Tension calculatons (p348)

Where C = comfort, Q = tons of crew accomodations, M = number of crew
C = (Q / M) - 5
Tension = C + Flux (if less then zero crew do SAN check)

So 5 tons per crew member sets C to zero, so you have a straight flux roll to see if they get antsy (rolled daily).

So for no tension rolls at all (worst case flux of -5)
0 = ( (Q / M) -5 ) -5
0 = (Q/M)-10
10 = Q/M
Q = 10M
You need 10 tons of space per crewmenber to avoid the SAN check altogether

...and that, dear reader, is the essence of the Yacht.
Would that also be the reason it is listed as a 500-ton unstreamlined hull now? Because the old ones were always a mere 200-ton unstreamlined hull and I am not sure if the new size is errata or changed for T5.
 
Why Marc went and changed tonnages around is beyond me. The Patrol Cruiser has been replaced as well. I guess he wanted to put (more) teeth into that ship (perhaps a CommCaster so they can hunt in packs). And we had to yell at Marc to put his Free Trader example at 200 tons, rather than the 600 he tried to sneak in.

Not that there can't be 600t Free Traders. It's just that many old-timey readers see the Beowulf, and therefore expect the Beowulf, dang nabbit.

On a good note, it gave Jim Kundert the precedent to suggest a solution to the Gazelle problem: bump it up to 400 tons without tanks, and suddenly it can hold onto its four hardpoints.

Hey, as Noble I am just fine with a 500-ton Yacht, it makes the custom 400-ton Yacht ISS Blue Smoke I have look a bit more legit.

I missed the 600-ton Free Trader though. I do like the new 400-ton rational and corrected Gazelle, make a lot more sense.
