Anybody need a player in the Toronto area?

Some day I'd like to run a game of my own. But it's been so damn long since I've even PLAYED an rpg, let alone Traveller, that I'm hungering for some remedial gaming.

Now, here's the deal. I may not even need to actually PLAY in the game at first. I might even be cool just to watch, as strange as that sounds. I want to get a feel for the game, the style of play that the group likes, and how the mechanics work so that if I do participate, I don't screw up the flow and atmosphere of the game. I know that taking on an unknown quantity, especially for an established group, can be a bit disconcerting.

Anybody in the Toronto area who might be able to help me out?

I feel your pain man , totally. I'm from the Toronto area originally (Mississauga). But for the last 18 years I've resided in London, Ontario. The only way I get to play is if I run a game.

I'm on the other side of the pond, RM, so I can't help directly, except with a supportive word:
Traveller is what you make it. Groups differ widely in their styles, some spend hours on diceless stage-performances, others wear the spots off the dice. Some favour high-tech combat, others run mysteries and puzzles.
Choose your own style. As long as you can find three or four people willing to join you, you've got a game.
Good luck. :)

Plot synopsis

The fateful crew of the March Harrier on a standard Regina-Ruie run ran into major engine problems which caused them to precipitate out of Jump Space early triggering a misjump. Initially, it appeared that they had jumped into an empty quadrant until they picked something on the far range of their scanner (about 4d away).

Using their cargo of pressurized "cola", they rigged together a cola drive, as a way of conserving fuel and pointing their ship in the direction of the object they hoped whatever it was might have the spare parts and more importantly fuel to get them back on their way.

Coming closer, they discovered the object was an enormous space station dating from the First Imperium. A makeshift coupling created a with a temporary airlock between the two ships revealed a corridor with traces of blood and a foul rank odor.

The game continues on March 28th at 7:00pm

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

And thanks for the plot synopsis Kafka. I've requested to join the meetup, and I'll rsvp before the Mar 28th meeting.

It doesn't sound like you could easily introduce a new character at this stage - but I'm looking forward to sitting in and seeing what happens next.

Our intrepid adventures left behind the powered down hulk of their ship to venture into the unknown of a space station that had seemingly been abandoned for three thousand years. The stench encountered earlier let them know that not all operations on the stations were long dead. Indeed, minimal life support indicated that something could be still salvaged from station. An abandoned elevator took them part of the way the top of station. After by passing a series of automatic sentry turrets that guarded the former detention centre, they came upon the recently spray painted symbol of the Flaming Eye - the old Vilani symbol for piracy...

Finding the main hanger full of abandoned and cannibalized fighters, they decided to make their way to the lower levels. A brief firefight with a feral Luugiir left a little more than egos damaged. The lower levels revealed a vast storehouse of humans in low berths (cryotubes) long dead showing signs of extreme freezer burn. However, one of the capsules had be tampered with. Smashed in odd fashion with traces of acid. Beyond that the freeze dried remains of a corpse in an adjoining room which had been restrained.

Further beyond was a control room of sorts with some functioning computers. Whilst the keyboards seemed to be standard Vilani they were missing a few keys. Similarly, the housing seemed to have operations that would have required manual intervention to be completely sealed...

An aborted attempt to restart the elevator lead to its destruction somewhere on the bottom of station. Having determined that is where the powerplant resides and would be the easiest way to get fuel to their crippled ship by reversing the flow and piping it to the outside. A recon team suddenly sees some sort of web or lattice like structure amidst the debris of the ruined elevator...

The adventure continues April 11th 2008.

The lattice of shattered beams remains of the elevator, girders and the anomalous piece of bulkhead thrown in for good measure combined with an organic sticky extraterrestrial "goo" initiated our resolute adventurers to rapidly backtrack. Upon hearing within close audible range a horrid roar originating from the dark recesses where the station?s powerplant was to be found.

Falling back to a supposed safer location - in the second habitation ring, the party came across an enormous botanical garden that in the midst of the tall grasses - a slithering carnivore assailed the party remorselessly.

Pressing ever further, the party then came upon the pirates who had indeed being using the station as a lair. Besting the pirates, they were able to take over the pirate?s shuttle. In the shuttle, they found a playing card - the Jack of Clubs in the Captain's safe. Within the eye of the card, there was a microdot showing different shipping times and locations.

It was soon determined that the crew must brave the monsters that inhabit the powerplant, if they are to get any fuel to their ailing vessel.

Want to find out what happens next? Better yet take part in the action - RVSP your spot for the game continues on May 9th 7:00!

The events in this game found the tables reversed. The party was rebooted, as the PCs became the dastardly and ruthless pirates that former player characters had been fighting until this point or in the immortal words of the Monty Python, "and now for something completely different..." As the players assumed the role of the pirates hunting their former PCs.

All was not black, however, as the pirates were clearly drugged and kept under firm discipline in one large social darwinist experiment. As the shackles were loosened ever slightly. Old rivalries and power struggles emerged. For the legacy of pirate ship's discipline had bred its toll. The hunt for former party was fought with many of the same perils that previous weeks had been met by the previous group. The pirate party is now holed up in the former PCs starship. Confused? Well there is a reason my handle is kafka. Next gaming session the two parties merge and face the nasty baddies that inhabit the space station's powerplant. Making the "lions, tigers & bears" that have challenged the parties up to now seem like small potatoes...

Subduing pirates was the first task of the March Harrier crew…not an easy task as 75% “opted” to be on the side of the pirates. Subduing/co-opting the pirates was the easy part especially as the drugs and implants used to control the pirate band began to wear off.

Which meant the only way out of this system was to return to space station…Down the gravtube shaft, past the alien webbing, through the tumbled girders and piping effectively sealing the party in the bowels of this antediluvian station. Transversing the darkened corridors, and through the din of half lighted corridors only to encounter more darkened corridors (ok, I think you are getting the picture…)

The Human and the not so human remains of previous "explorers" abound in the hellish nightmarish bowels of the space station. Nasties abound, as the ever present danger of electricity. Before coming to face-to-face with the Mother Of All Nasties... The Powerplant awaits and just within grasp. As does something else...O MOTHER...or perhaps...Mummy!!! I want to go home NOW...

Twisting around in the endless corridors of this semi-abandoned ancient Vilani space station lead the party downward past unimaginable nasties (you know, you have seen them in the previous album). Until, the characters manage to reach the station’s power plant; where players manage to reverse the flow to fuel their ship. Dismantling the explosives on board their ship was the easy part...defeating the pirate ships closing in fast was a tad more difficult... Firing and running...always a good strategy when in a lowly merchant ship when the pirates outnumber you two to one and a sizable greater amount of firepower. Jumping to the next star system seems easy.

[cue the Imperial March]..."This INS Relentless, you look badly damaged. May we render assistance?" The next adventure awaits. Newbies are welcome to join.
