Has there been any discussions on the "original" DGP timeline/story that must have been planned by GDW/DGP before being abandoned in favor of the Virus/New Era story?

Anyone knows anything on this topic?

I'm definintely going to base a campaign around these ideas and see how it plays out.

I don't think DGP and GDW had much in the way of a plan going in, I think a lot of it was mainly left up to DGP. Keep in mind that Chuck came into the picture something like 3 or 4 years after MT was launched.

If I had to guess, you see what existed of a plan in the form of the Rebellion Sourcebook; get the game to 1120 and build from there.
 
The best way to describe GDW in those years was winging it. They had hugely successful brandname: Traveller but no real clear way of moving things forward. The direction of Challenge proves this. Clearly they wanted a way out but could not figure out what direction that should be for a RPG that needed out of its wargame roots. Most of the designers seems to have adopted a rather bunker mentality believing the product the product could live and build on their past glory but really had no way of recreating the sense of wonder.

DGP was entirely a slave to GDW's dictate. However, they did do a rear guard action by focusing on Deneb as a zone of Classic Traveller with MegaTraveller rules. In the long run, if they acquired the IP, they visualized many competing Domains each offering a slightly different feeling of Traveller whilst allowing the timeline to crawl along. It would be the classic Civil War scenario with the 8 or so factions.
