Writing for QLI: Travellers' Aide or EPIC Adventure Series

We hope to make the Travellers Aide and EPIC Adventure series a regular gaming resource, but for this to happen we need authors. Ideally, QLI would like to work with a team of regular contributors but we're just as open to one-off authors.
See the Call for Authors below for a list of "pre-approved" Travellers' Aide titles we are seeking authors for. Additional ideas will be considered. If you have a good concept, pitch your idea to the Line Editor at travsub@travellerrpg.com.

Author Guidelines

There isn't a lot of money in it. QLI will pay $250 for all rights to your submission. Payment is due 45 days after publication in whichever medium is first. Publication will be at the discretion of QLI, though permission to publish may be withdrawn by the author at any point until art and layout have been commissioned. Similarly, QLI may in some circumstances choose not to publish after acceptance has been made. In both these cases no payment is due, and the rights revert to the original author.
Ideas and concepts remain your own until accepted for publication, but at that point will pass into the "game domain". QLI gains the right to publish and reprint your work in any medium as seen fit, and concepts contained in your submission become available for others to use in the same manner as any other official Traveller game materials.
By submitting the draft you certify that it contains nothing libellous and is your own work, containing no plagiarism or unauthorised use of intellectual properties, and created with proper regard to Traveller canon, avoiding areas of "forbidden canon".
Standards of content and decency will be observed in keeping with Marc Miller's vision of the Traveller universe. The editors will make any changes seen fit, and will definitely ask you to revise the draft at least once.
Travellers' Aide volumes will typically be 16-24,000 words in length, or equivalent in the case where the submission has many maps, stat blocks or similar.
Authors will be properly credited in all published versions of their work, except where a trivial amount of the work is quoted as part of a different publication.
All Travellers' Aide submissions will be as rules-light as possible. Stats, where necessary, will be in T20 form, though additional Classic Traveller stats are entirely acceptable. It is preferable if stats can be provided by the author, but in some cases these can be created in-house.

Notes: We're afraid that we're not interested in anyone's pet "fixes" for the Traveller universe, nor in variant settings at this time. Travellers' Aide is set in the Official Traveller Universe, and whatever you may think of some of its concepts, we cannot accept submissions that do not follow its basic structure.

CALL FOR AUTHORS

The following issues of Travellers' Aide and EPIC Adventures are currently in need of an author. The brief outlines listed here are open to some discussion if the writer has good ideas.

EPIC Adventure Series

Adventures of length 16-24,000 words are always welcomed. Setting will normally be Gateway Domain in year 990, but other settings will be considered. We are more likely to consider scenarios in the following settings than any others:

  • Gateway 990
  • Spinward Marches or Solomani Rim 1105-1116
  • Mileu 0
  • Spinward Marches or Diaspora/Old Expanses 1200 (TNE)

Note that QLI will not be publishing materials in the alternate post-1116 setting used by GURPS Traveller. However, it should be possible to make a "late golden age" scenario sufficiently flexible to be used in that setting.

Guns & Gear Series

Military Systems
Weapons and Equipment for military organizations at various tech levels, in the style of
TA1: Personal Weapons.
Should include military-grade weapons from smallarms to support weapons, plus combat vehicles and support systems such as electronic battle aids. Also some discussion of the process of obtaining military weapons through legal and illegal channels.

Military Vehicles
Vehicles for military organizations at various tech levels, in the style of TA3: Ground Vehicles.
Should include new weapon systems and design options for military class vehicles. Also some discussion of the structure and organization of mobile military units and how they might be used.

Defensive and Survival Equipment
Armor and protective devices, hostile-environment gear, ice, desert and underwater equipment and exploration vehicles, in the style of TA1: Personal Weapons.     Should include discussion on survival needs in various environments.

Game Aides Series

The Game Aides (sic) series is intended to provide the referee with a quick source of game data for those moments when the Travellers wander off the expected path, or to flesh out a minor encounter into something more detailed.

76 Aliens: Major Races
Alien NPC templates in the style of 76 Gunmen.

  • Aslan
  • Droyne
  • Hivers (& Ithklur)
  • K'Kree
  • Vargr

76 More Aliens: Minor Races of the Gateway Region
Alien NPC templates in the style of 76 Gunmen.

  • Akeed
  • Apes
  • Beree
  • Chirpers
  • Dolphins
  • Kafoe
  • Kahyri
  • Orca
  • Sydites
  • Ursa

Another 76 Aliens
Alien NPC templates in the style of 76 Gunmen. Non-natives of the Gateway region who might be encountered there or elsewhere. Bwaps, Virushi and others….

Starship Encounters
A set of starship encounters ready fleshed out to be used by the harassed referee. Should include:

  • Lists of Names by type (Merchie, Scout, Patrol Ship, General)
  • Stats (but not deckplans) for minor variants (e.g., Q-ship subsidised merchant)
  • Semi-detailed vessels:- specifics of a particular vessel with history and some crew names. One or more in each class.
  • Starship encounter adventure seeds, in the style of a Signal GK or Odd Job adventure.

Animal Encounters
A set of animal encounters grouped by terrain type (e.g. desert, mountain, hostile world), including description and T20 and CT stats. Similar to original CT supplement of same name, but creatures require a description of at least a few paragraphs.
Also adventure seeds, in the style of a Signal GK or Odd Job adventure, to make those long overland treks more hazardous - or interesting.

Random Encounters 1: Bar-Room Denizens
A set of semi-detailed individuals and groups (with basic T20 and CT stats) that might be encountered on a visit to a bar, recreation area or starport shopping area. Also tables for random encounters in these areas.

Random Encounters 2: Travellers and Citizens
A set of encounters (with CT and T20 stats) ranging from eccentric (or excruciatingly normal) starship passengers to fellow adventurers who might provide assistance, opposition or apply for a job.

Random Encounters 3: Armed Bands
A set of encounters ranging from the official (e.g. Imperial Customs inspection team, corporate security squad) to the, well, less official (pirates, thugs, mercs). Semi-detailed leaders and follower stats.

Starships Series

Each volume will deal with a specific class of vessel, its variants and background. Deckplans are necessary, along with a history of the class or type and either a full adventure or a number of adventure seeds in the Odd Jobs or Signal GK style. Classes to be covered include:
