SWN's Revised edition is on Kickstarter so I decided to ask the people here about their opinions.
Do you use the tools it comes with in your Traveller gaming? Have you ever been tempted to play/run SWN instead of Traveller?
(Heresy, I know, but there's a supplement for interstellar trading campaigns in SWN 1st edition. SWN 2e should be 100% backwards compatible with it, too).

If you use SWN, did you use the default setting, or something closer to your Traveller settings? And how do you deal with the existence of level-based advencement? (That's a serious question BTW, integrating the power-up that a new level represents is always a big challenge for me when playing in a SF setting).

It has some fantastic setting-generation (and world-generation) rules that complements the Traveller stuff.

Other than that, it's a perfectly wonderful OSR space game in the vein of Traveller. Really, I can see Traveller's fingerprints all over it, though it feels more like D&D.

The Kickstarter for the 2nd edition is at like 300% after a couple days, so people obviously love it.

Yeah, I had the same impression upon reading the 1st edition. The "it feels more like D&D" part is why I decided to stick to Traveller, though, while using the setting generation rules on occasion.

I must note that the preview of the 2nd edition tells me it's getting even closer to Traveller, and would probably be even closer if you just stop giving extra HP after 3rd level or so, or if you decide to implement a Vitality/Wounds divide.

Mods, giving links for education purposes, I'm under the impression the makers of a game have to use the products forum but I can link especially in the SWN forum, clear if I've done wrong.

No point of sale links to non-traveller materials. Hence their deletion.

I like SWN, although that D&D feel and general softness of the setting mean I don't run it.

Having said that, Starvation Cheap the military campaign sourcebook and some of the tech supplements were very good.

I really like the fact that the Kickstarter says the new version will be backwards compatible.

Actually that fact and they're sticking with the free corebook and making it backwards compatible are really positive things. Getting the core rules free made me buy supplements for the first edition and no doubt it'll work the same for the new edition.

Other publishers could take note of that care for the existing fan base.

There is a kickstarter for 2e SWN - after a week it has 1424 backers. The MgT Great Rift kickstater just completed with a total backer number of 1130.

I wonder how many people have backed both - just to give a rough idea of the state of sci-fi rpgs.

For comparison, FFG at one point posted a pic of a partial shipment of one of the Star Wars Core Rulebooks... it was at least two pallets, with at least 24 cases of 50 each... and sold out within a year... they had to reprint.

I've seen estimates of between 10K units and 50K units sold; FFG doesn't release that data.

It's worth noting the Roll20 2017q2 numbers...
78,557 total players
48,732 played D&D 5E
23,430 played Pathfinder
21,281 playerd D&D3.5
8,657 played Warhammer RPGs, lumping Fantasy and 40K all into one lump
8,519 Played D&D4E
8,138 played Star Wars (lumping all official games - WEG, D20, Saga, and FFG - into one pool)
8,025 played Shadowrun
5,821 played AD&D
1,868 played Pre-3E D&D other than AD&D. (Original, Holmes, BX, BECMI, Cyclopedia)
2,728 played GURPS
1,521 played SWN
1,290 played CP2020
1,260 played Traveller (which may not include all the GT games)

Roll20 has a bias for d20-like mechanics... but the use numbers are hard data.

A friend of mine a few years ago mentioned that there was a free copy available on DTRPG and asked if I'd be willing to play. After downloading it and having a browse I suggested we stick with Traveller. I'm not a fan of classes and levels, and if I wanted a more space-operatic game would just go back to the modified Space Opera we played about a decade ago.

I'm glad it's successful on Kickstarter because I'm biased about people playing RPGs (particularly people in their teens and 20s), but I know what I like in a game, and it's not quite SWN.
