Default Alternity PlayTest Beta

is up at DrivethruRPG.

Just got it less than 10 min ago. It feels similar to the old game. Success is roll a d20 and beat your target of 20-(stat+skill). They use die steps sort of like the old game. The die steps add or subtract to roll total.

It's just the quickplay module... pregens only, no CGen.

Fails to answer my biggest questions about the new edition.

What would those be aramis? I am expecting:

No Star*Drive - that was in d20 Future, unless WotC made arrangements.
No Dark Matter - Same reason
No PL system. d20 published in the d20 Modern SRD, so they might lift that, but as that is a piece of Modern....

Perhaps just a rights issue. Star Frontiers was also d20 Future, but non-profit matierial (Star Frontiersman mag. amongst others) is published.

Dragon had the SF conversions for Alternity.

Yes, but that was back when TSR (or WotC) had the reins on all of them.

Honestly, the beta or freebie or whatever it is doesn't do what such a product should... distinguish it and sell it.

I'm glad they kept the core mechanic but I'd have to see a lot more to buy it again. I own all the old stuff so no need to really race out after it. That being said, I would love a better version of character generation and some real thought put into it.

What's this about no StarDrive? That would suck but I guess I have all that stuff already.

The d20 Future suppment posted mini-campaigns. Snippet/overviews of campaigns really. Amongst them were:
Dimension X
From the Dark Heart of Space
The Wasteland
Bughunters (from Amazing Engine)
Genetech (Polyhedron #155)
Mecha Crusade (Polyhedron #154)
Star*Drive (from Alternity)
Star Law (from Star Fronters)
The following races were published in d20 Future: Aleerin, Dralasite, Fraal, Sesheyan, T’sa, Vrusk, Weren, Yazirian

They also did a Dark Matter supplement.

Both d20 Future and Dark Matter can be purchased at DriveThru, so I am guessing WotC owns them or is exercising use of their IP...

They have released more details about the new default setting, Protostar, on their blog:

Sad. No Stardrive. Ugh. I already hate the built-in setting. Gates. No Aliens. This is not the Alternity I was looking for.

I'm willing to look at it when it comes out but the scaling down of skills is another thing I don't like. Obviously, it was the playtest version but it was too watered down for me. That being said, it's the same guys and most of their stuff was amazing. So I'm interested.

You could always make Stardrive a future version of Protostar.

Protostar has a few things that interest me:

hard sci fi - no artificial gravity (yet), reminiscent of other settings I quite enjoy, T2300, Terradyne, Orbital, Blue Planet

extinct advanced aliens - so ruins and relics to mess around with

planets with intelligent aliens that haven't discovered the gate network yet

planet of the week adventure - hop to the next system and explore
