Default Jebediah - Baby Steps

OK, I read the first three chapters of the rules and think I am ready to give this a shot …

NAME: Jebediah

Distribute 21 points among 6 abilities:
Strength 4
Agility 6
Endurance 6
Intellect 1
Charisma 2
Social 2

This grants initial skills based on ability:
Fisticuffs-3 (str-1)
Throwing-2 (str/2)
Stealth-5 (agil-1)
Wilderness Travel (foraging)-5 (end-1)
Swimming-3 (end/2)**
Observation-0 (int-1)
Eloquence-1 (cha-1)
Riding (horse)-1 (soc-1)

First Career (seaman) requires Soc 3-, Str 3+ (qualifies) add skills:
Fisticuffs-1
Throwing-1
Swimming-1
Linguistics-2
Piloting-1
Observation-1
*[A quick question, what about this career makes him a “topman (sailor)”?]

Second Career (Big Game Hunter) requires Agil 4+, End 5+ (qualifies) add skills:
Wilderness Travel (foraging)-1
Fieldcraft-1
Tracking-2
Marksmanship (rifle)-2
Linguistics-1

Two Careers yields 2 skill points, use to purchase:
Marksman (rifle)-4

So final skill count looks like:

Strength 4
Fisticuffs-4
Throwing-3

Agility 6
Stealth-5
Marksmanship (Rifle)-6
Marksmanship (Pistol)-3
Marksmanship (Bow)-3

Endurance 6
Wilderness Travel (Foraging)-6
Wilderness Travel (Mountaineering)-3
Wilderness Travel (Mapping)-3
Wilderness Travel (Woodcutting)-3
Fieldcraft-1
Tracking-2
Swimming-4**

Intellect 1
Observation-1

Charisma 2
Eloquence-1
Linguistics (English)-3
Linguistics (French)-1
Linguistics (Mandarin)-1

Social 2
Riding (Horse)-1
Riding (all other)-0
Piloting (Sailing Vessel)-1
Piloting (all other)-0

[With your permission, I would like to make one change to the skill list: Change the Social Ability skill from Riding to Piloting. I propose that Jebediah is from some island fishing village where it is natural to sail from childhood, but not many opportunities to ride. I have never played Space 1889, so you decise whether this change would be more ‘color’ or ‘character suicide’. ]

Social 2 (Alternate)
Piloting (Sailing Vessel)-2
Piloting (Aerial Flyer)-1
Piloting (Cloudship)-1
Piloting (Zeppelin)-1
Piloting (Interplanetary Ether Flyer)-1
Piloting (Steam Vessel)-1
Piloting (Submarine)-1

I don’t know how skill checks are made and I don’t know how important Piloting-1 is, so I can’t tell whether this makes him somewhat useful at the helm of an airship or this is too much of a benefit.

The general concept for Jebediah is he grew up in a fishing village, spent a lot of time circumnavigating the globe on a China Clipper, then became something of a professional fisherman/hunter/mountain man. Jeb has walked across the Himalayas and Mongolian plains. He has sailed alone from Southeast Asia, visited the Pacific islands, and crossed the ocean to land in Canada. He has lived as a hunter/trapper across Canada before ending up in New England. Then he sailed across the North Atlantic in a fishing boat to return to England. Most recently, he has just returned from a hunting expedition watching the back of some rich aristocrat that wanted to hunt big game in the Serengeti Plains. At this point, Jeb has run out of frontiers … then he hears about an expedition heading to Venus. The only frontier left for him to explore is … up.

Once we finish all of the 'making sausage' part of the process, we can move him to the regular character topic.

You missed the Swimming at End/2 default. (In the errata and the GM screen.)

So Riding-1 or Piloting-2?

Losing the ability to ride is a significant hit. It means much the same as in rural Alaska not being able to drive - not only are you unable to drive, but you have to either walk or beg others to drive.

I'll allow it, but I'd advise against it in general. It also means people won't be sure he's of correct station... but that's maybe not relevant on venus.

I'm curious how he managed all that with an Intellect of 1, but I know the rules say he could...

How hard is it really to furl/unfurl sails, fish for Tuna/Cod and wander through the woods eating whatever you find?

I put the 1 in Intellect (rather than another ability) because the skills associated with Intellect were the most contrary to a Crocodile Dundee/Mountain Man (Hunter/Seaman) type of character.

It seems strange to me as well, but from the skill list, I guess Intellect is closer to 'formal education' or 'creative thinking' than raw IQ.

Since a 1 in Social starts out as a typical worker and a 2 is a Craftsman, the attribute scale seems to start out close to 'population mean' and reflect those who excel. So an intellect of 1 may be more like an IQ of 95-105 ... just an average Joe (oops, this is the British Empire, so make that an average bloke).

Except that on p.36 re NPC abilities, it recommends that "mentally oriented" NPCs have Intellect and Agility of 4, and Strength and Endurance 2; while "physically oriented" NPCs have Strength and Endurance of 4, and Intellect and Agility 2; Charisma can be randomly or custom set; Social determined by occupation.
