Careers: Royal Navy, Inventor.

Background:

Born in Scotland, he’s son of a long lived military tradition in his family. Most his family has served in the Argylls (Argyll and Southlanders regiment).

Being more technically oriented than people oriented, he decided against family tradition to join the Royal Navy. The only reason his father allowed that was his elder brother was already in the Argylls.

In the Navy, his skills were recognized, but he was not a liked officer. His aloof personality and the fact he never learned when to shut up led him to frequent problems with his superiors, ship changes and few friends. After some years, he left the Navy and committed himself fully to his research.

Personality:

He’s strongly loyal to the Queen, both by family tradition and conviction. He sees with some contempt those not lucky enough to be British, while he is condescending with those of European origin (about US citizens, he sees them as rebel colonists who should be led again to the right way of the Crown). He will nonetheless respect those who show intelligence.

He’s absolutely machine minded, being more at ease among machinery than among people. Of course, that makes him not too good a company in social events…

Appearance:

He’s heavy built and red-haired and breaded. He doesn’t care too much about his look, usually seeming even uncaring. He uses to dress with traditional Scottish clothing and to wear a kilt with his clan’s tartan, making no attention to any comment this may arouse.

Notes:

Genrated under the assigning attributes rules.

Is there a reason for the inventor's engineering skill being specifically in Naval Architecture?

May he play bagpipe (as color note)? AFAIK there's no skill for that...

a point in ride horse would allow ride any at 2...
half a point in some mental hobby would get a skill 1.
while the rules don't explicitly permit it, when I asked Frank Chadwick in the late 90's, he endorsed raising additional specialties above their default of half the first one.
seldom hurts to be able to shoot.

French or Koine Greek would round out a classical education.

Each skill is related to one of your attributes/stats. For buying skills with the general skill points, your stats also determine how much it costs per skill level: if appropriate stat = 1 or 2, skills cost 2 pts/level; if 3 or 4, cost 1 pt/level; if 5 or 6, cost 1/2 pt/level (page 12, center column, near the bottom). You cannot use these points to raise a skill higher than its associated stat.

So if you are a Cowboy with Soc=2, your default Riding is 1, then you get Riding 2 from your career, for total of 3. It is OK to have your skill higher than stat with career skills, but you cannot use any general points to raise it higher, because it is already higher than the associated stat (Soc). So your poor sad Cowboy cannot ride as well as a Banker with Soc=5.

If you are Cavalry NCO with Agility=5, you don't get a default Marksman skill, but get Marksman(Rifle) 1 from your career. Then if you want to raise it with general skill points, you could use 1.5 general points to raise it by 3 (1/2 pt/level because your Agility is 5), giving you Marksman(Rifle) 4. Having that level with Rifle also gives you Marksman(Pistol) 2 by default (1/2 of the higher Marksman skill for Rifle). If you want Pistol to be better, you can use another 1/2 skill point to raise it to Marksman(Pistol) 3 (1/2 pt/level because still based on Agility of 5).

Does that help? Need more examples?

I'm afraid I don't understand several points (not sure you understood the CharGen system):
  • if your int is 5, you have default observation at 4, as you spent 2 carrers as a reporter, 2 (1/career) is added to it (to 6), and you cannot spend free points on it, as is already higher than the ruling atribute (so your observation 3 may not be what you add to your default)
  • Something similar happens with stealth. Having Agi 5, you have it at 4 by default...
  • Again in wilderness travel (aside from the fact you should choose your specialization). End 2 gives it as default to 1, and your careers add 2 (1/career) to it...
  • Again with Riding. Soc 3 gives you a default of 2.
  • after 2 careers as reporter, your theatrics should be 4 (2/career)

As given, your character (Str: 2, Agl: 5, End: 3, Int: 5, Char: 4, Soc: 3) has as defaults Fisticuffs: 1, Throwing: 1, Stealth: 4, Wilderness Travel (specialty): 2, Swiming: 11, Observation: 4, Eloquence: 3 and Riding (specialty): 2.
note 1: I assume this applies:
Quote:
Originally Posted by aramis View Post

To this, your two careers as reporters would give you Observation 2 (rising it to 6), Theatrics 4, Eloquence 4 (raising it to 7, the maximum posible in the game), Linguistics to 4 (so 4 foreign languages) and Wilderness Travel 2 (raising it to 4).

So, at the end of your career, your skills would be : Fisticuffs: 1, Throwing: 1, Stealth: 4, Wilderness Travel (specialty): 4, Swiming: 1, Observation: 6, Eloquence: 7, Theatrics: 4, Linguistics: 42 and Riding (specialty): 2.
Note 2: the career tells you they must be German or French. In fact, as skill levels in foreign langauges are at half your linguistics skill, and, the other two points should be in other languages (to be agreed among you and Aramis)
After that, you'll have 2 points to buy other skills (or levels) at 1/2 point each for those under Agl and Int attributes, 1 each for those under End, Char and Soc, and 2 each for those under Str.

As a personal opinion, if Aramis still allows you (after all we have not yet begun), I'd take only one Reporter career and either have the 6 points for skill purchasing or have another career to give your character more variety in skills (In this case, to fit with the rol of your character, Journalist should be the seccond career, but that has no effect in CharGen). But that's only my personal opinion, it's your character....

I'm not picky on that score - at this point, reworking the character a bit within concept is no big deal.

Jame: McPerth's notes on the math appear correct. It appears that there hasn't been a whole lot of study of Venus, so unless you went on the London Times' voyage, you've probably not had a lot of exposure to venusian tongues.
