Small Starburst Setting: MegaCorps and Major Companies. (Part 2)

7. Threts, IC.
A. Speciality Goods or Services: Smart+ military weapons systems for the Imperium and mercenary units.
B. Baseline Tech Level: F
C. Standard Price Adjustment: + 30 %
D. Corporate Headquarters: FS 1721 A 9C7 216-D S GG Im.
E. Known Shareholders: Imperial Holdings = 5%, N&S = 10%.
F. QREBS: Quality = 8 (+3) [Three Years], Reliability = +2, Ease of Use = +3, Burden = -2, Safety = -3.
G. Remarks: Threts manufactures high quality and very reliable weapons and military hardware. Reports from end users are very favorable in their reviews of Threts products citing the very helpful, interactive, multi-lingual manuals included. Also cited as another quality feature of this company's products are the ergonomic and low mass. Most troops find Threts weapons and systems so easy to use that when the inevitable malefaction occurs that fatalities and destruction are sure to be the result. Squads and some say platoons have been decimated by a Threts malfunction. Which considering the products can be spectacular to witness explaining the popularity of some recorded incidents which have made it out various official archive and on ImpNet nodes devoted to military.
H. Rumors: Some sources indicate that since a Threts anti-vehicle weapon was used the company might have been involved in the Winter Ball assassination attempt.

E. Known Shareholders: Imperial Holdings = 5%, DDB = 7%.
F. QREBS: Quality = 8 (+3) [Three Years], Reliability = +1, Ease of Use = -3, Burden = +3, Safety = 0.
G. Remarks: Originally the Jump Drive division of DDB it was spun off as a separate entity some time in the late Third Empire. TeleAstronics Drives and Plants are known to be some of the highest quality and are often found in many Imperial vessels, most notably the Navy and Scouts. The products produced by TeleAstronics are slightly above average in reliability and are extremely easy to maintain practically run themselves. The downside is that the company's products tend to be very bulky and have control panels, power and data cable runs that protrude in odd fashion leading to bashed shins among the Engineers who are working on a ship with one of their Drives or Plants on board. Drives and Power Plants manufactured by TeleAstronics are generally considered to be fairly standard as far as safety is concerned.

AI Owner. There are times when a Personality (AI) is assigned to a vessel of the Imperial or Royal Navy or perhaps a vehicle of the Imperial Army and Royal Marines. Most of the time, they will be loaded into a sophontoid form. However, in some rare cases they stay with their initial issue warfighting forms throughout their Career in the service. In even more rare cases they have been separated from the service in that same form. Usually this only done for Flag Officers and those Personalities that have earned high level decorations, in all cases the Personality is a Citizen and some case a member of the Peerage.

***

Imprints. These are the copies of living person for contract work, such as being laid on to a cloned brain for starship computers. They are an odd legal case as they do under Imperial High Law qualify as Citizens, but by contract they are not. They are Subjects of the Imperium and may go on to becoming Citizens, but when they are granted Citizenship they must choose a new name, the original maintaining their name. Imprints may have autonomous budget authority in some positions, such as a starship or vehicle brains. They are generally granted a personal budget out main funds that are used for upkeep and repair. Most often Imprints are legally entitled to pay and their budget is funded out of that with the remaining funds being placed in a trust.

***

Since the Great Rebellion of the Dispossessed that preceded the Fifth Empire those Sophonts who are made, not born, have been considered Persons under Imperial Law. This has allowed synthetic persons or sophontoids to pursue careers throughout the various Imperiums that have come since the Great Rebellion.

Several of the those most popular careers for sophontoids have been in the realms of the courts and academia. It is here that a sophontoid's amazing abilities to data mine in real time come into their own. An decision handed down by a sophontoid judge would do Zhi Peng the Careful proud with the depth of citations. Such decision are generally handed down in two formats, the abstract and the annotated. The abstract decision contains the basic opinion and citations necessary to understand the court's ruling, while the annotated decision has precedence chains and links, the record of hearings and motions, evidence and briefs that allow a reader to throughly examine the ruling and the reasoning behind it. This depth is also found in the papers and books of those sophontoids that inhabit the lofty intellectual fields of the sciences.

Small Starburst NUCALI: The "Space Coral" of New California.

I have a small colony world; UWP: [Artifact Hex 1101] C 310 883-8 The Republic of New California.

They are sleeper colonists from old, pre-jump Terra. So far they live underground (player surmised and it seemed sensible so I am running with it), but not much beyond that.

Mostly I wonder what they may have to trade. Right now I am running with (the name is a place holder) "Space Coral".

There is a trace of atmosphere and less than 10% free water, but there might be enough for a coral/lichen type organism. I haven't finished building the world entirely, I am leaning toward small, but dense, basically it has larger than normal metal content. I think it might make the first attempts to grow food in the native soil extremely difficult, not sure though. I am hazarding that they might also have a decent supply of radioactives, but not a geologist.

On the other hand I thought it might allow for two things, one the "Space Coral" leeches the metals forming its skeleton from the surface and below which gives individual corals unique coloring and possibly material qualities. Also it would create under the surface caves or tunnel structures. This is what our intrepid colonists used to build the first city.

If this is not too far out of whack it means that quite possibly the "Miner's Union" and the "Coral Artist Guild" fighting for control of the best metal veins.

On the Adventuring side, I think that one of the above sides has discovered the Imperial Scout Vasily Gregoravich, kidnapped him and are planning on ransoming him back to the Empire for advanced technology (the Empire is TL-B). Problem is that the local confederation of pocket empires left over from the last war of the "Old Empire" not only did not share their higher tech with the new Terran colonists, they forbade them from having those techs with out permission of the "Old Ones". The "Old Ones" have only allowed the Terrans two planets, one of which they originally landed at and another one they have been allowed to colonize (one parsec rimward of New California).

Well, that is it for now. Comments, criticisms, suggestions?

Note: This is the old Beta draft and I will need to hit BeastMaker to actually generate them. Also, some of you may not have been able to see it as I just discovered the first post was in the Moot Spire. Again, sorry about that mistake.

Small Starburst SETTING: History of the Riftborne Domains (Permatic).

[FS 1725] Permatic was originally simply OUTPOST: PERMATIC of the Imperial Scouts Service of the Fifth Imperium [5ISS]. (wrote "late", but I am thinking more mid-5th Imperium)

A Scout Vault or Skip vessel (BCS) was sent to catalog the new Riftborne Domains (wrote this before the Domains were on the charts so it was Far Stars Domains. Also "Leap" was what I wrote, but man that is a fanarking big rift which is nice and isolating which was the point, but I think a bit above even the height of the 5I max TL. If mid-Imperium it is Skip ships, late 5I it is Vault ships.)

The Far Stars are in a collection of star clusters in a rift spin-rimward of the Capital of the Fifth Imperium (which is not Terra).

User must rotate image 90 degrees right for correct Coreward projection.

Now, the updated info that did not go in at that time are that they were aiming for the largest cluster (blue). The clusters are as usual designated originally on the charts as Alpha (or maybe Prime or some variant) with Beta being the next largest and Delta the smallest cluster. The Scouts were actually aiming for the center of Alpha cluster but landed at Permatic. Once they had done the basic first in stuff, they started the long term mission of setting up Outpost* Permatic which became the center of further exploration of what were then merely known as the Riftborne Clusters-3 on the charts. Once they had set up the Outpost they aimed three sub-missions, one at each cluster. These sub-missions which went out, set another Outpost and explored on duty that sometimes lasted months (always two weeks minimum), but these sub-missions were anchored to Outpost Permatic as that was sent back as the Beacon for later Imperial missions. Their Skip ship left after the first Outpost was set up and continued its mission to span the rift between the arms of the galaxy and then explore the next arm rimward.

Eventually, colonist, the companies and the wars that come to the "unspoiled frontier" grew the Imperial presence to merit the name the Riftborne Region on the charts. The clusters named by this point [ Names would go here if you want a shot at them ] began to pull the center away from then the Waystation Permatic on the charts, with a note about the presence of a new IN base. The clusters had greater density of stars and population but the new Far Stars sector was still on paper the heavy weight power with the Court at Capital and had the 2nd Duke of the Far Stars representing the old world in the Moot. Eventually the Region was elevated to an Imperial Domain and given name the Riftborne Domains. The great Vault Fleets from Capital and the new routes that connected an empire that spanned the arm brought waves new people, technologies, rumors, trade and adventures to the new Domains. It was these great Vault ships that fought the Great Enemy first and it was their loss early in the Great War that helped cripple and eventually destroy the Great and Honorable Fifth Imperium of Man, Kin and the Stars.

The Far Stars once again became the center of Imperial power and attention as the first Vault Courier brought the news of some grand weapon triggered and an entire Armada fighting and losing to an unknown enemy wielding what appear to annihilation weapons. These rumors confirmed when the war moved to the Domain and the Far Stars and it is where the Emperor came to sue for Peace and the Great Enemy's Sufferance. This Imperial submission shattered the greatest and best of the Old Empires of history, the Fifth Imperium. What followed are mere shadows of what once was the finest of all the human interstellar polities. The Riftborne Domains may have suffered war, fall of several empires and the Interregnum, but it is returning to life and there still scattered about strange and dangerous Relics of this lost war and many pay well for them. They can not have one without strict rules being in place, investigations done, preparations made and security permissions secured. Not doing so can be extremely lethal under Imperial High Law because Treaty made require it and because doing so once set the war in motion that left the Relics there in the first place.

Oh and did we mention the part where these things are really damned dangerous and probably horrifically lethal in ways not imaged. Some say the old logs of shattered and distorted Old Imperial warships mention triple meson turrets for point defense on 1000 ton ships that ripped capital ships apart with stasis weapons and dealt with fighters and destroyers with annihilation beams and missiles taking cruisers. Another point is most of what people encounter when it comes to man-portable Enemy Relics is that these are often what they (the Great Enemy) considered proper kit for a trooper.
"If an Enemy Relic is man portable then it was designed to used against man and his vehicles. Report all Enemy Relics to the nearest Imperial official and do not interact with it, leave and prevent others from interacting with it."
Imperial Standards (Relics, Enemy). 13th Edition.
ISSC Press.
*An Outpost is not quiet a full Base yet, but has the goal putting in place the basic infrastructure to what will end up being the first Waystation in an uncharted, unexplored area. The Outpost is a long stay, possibly decades long stay, but not a Colony as they are not staying there, they are merely basing from there first. It is the seed of the network that becomes the branches of the X-Boat Routes most times. The vessels carrying Mission Riftborne Spinrim were Battle Class Ships (BCS) containing many smaller Type-S+ starships used to explore the local area.

Arrow [Referee] The Shout Out for Excellent Work While The Boss Snapped.

Thanks go publicly and with proper respect to Citizen Pendragonman for volunteering his time at here the local library where the crazy old Director and Chief Archivist of the Library (or the more properly ADSGD) of the Thornwood-Daarnulud Institute Branch (heir of the knowledge and history of distant lost Terra) holds sway. Then he lost his damned fool mind on the man for genuinely working and not just pretending to do some useful thing like "'look I put them in order of their color in the rainbow. didn't i do good? :arrgghh must not kill:". No, he did something that was in fact on the list of "needs to done" and was not being "done". Now it is "done". Thank you again for being such a Gentleman.

He may (if he choses to) create and send to the Referee an Archivist for the Staff at the Royal Permatic Library (the first true step into the Institute's old beings network, you don't send noobs to deal with the Elders without training. And now you personally know why. They could have a Bad Experience.) Citizen Pendragonman gets the Honors, Title and Rank of The Archivist of the House Rules* since he did get that squared away when I asked him to.

The Order of Precedence is: After me (Magnus), pendragonman rules in the House Rule thread.

Anyway, being that I was a complete and patented SJRDF meltdown this week I am publicly apologizing. I shouldn't have tried to tough out having the unknown sick. (Last time sorta killed me for a minute, well I know what that one was/is.) So, I had a bunch of apologizing to do this week. Which being one of those seriously, good guy nobles all metagame styles, I surely did. PMs were exchanged and things are back to stable and not so damned angry on my part. Sorry for splash damage if any to the rest of you. Been a bad week, not an excuse, I mean the old lady's needle is making me Save versus Poison right now, just a report.

That is all. Though I am tempted to hide the fact that William Gibson's Neuromancer got me on what you could do with personality recordings, AIs and people on ROMs. (And a furtherance of my constant crush on pretty fighty umm chicks. But while Molly is bloody hot, a certain Dana best remember I respect her man. Hell, I almost envy her man and his capabilities, then I remember I too am a cyborg and maintenance sucks.)

That got added to my personal and professional interest in psionics, the police, and other nerd things, like finding what actually gave humans the energy to have super powers. It is by the way an artificial ATP stabilizer created in the UNA on Terra as a bioweapon or an agricultural experiment gone wrong, sources are muddled on this. Either way its remnants and effects are still found among the mainline human genepool and has been noticed in those with Talents and Psionics.

So in a truly I think unique Traveller5 ATU background, I have AI, superpowers and Fusion+* for thousands of years. They have bad people handled. We make a copy, put that on a self as the Archived Convicted Imperial Citizen (or Subject) [ACIC or ACIB] and then copy that master, edit it and reimplant the new altered version of you out to "Serve the Imperium" (in you know whatever way, they aren't real specific oddly).

Now, for 5 points what is the answer to the questions:
  • Who makes the master copy?
  • Where is it done?
  • How do they secure the master?
  • Where do they keep the master?
  • How many copies do they make?
  • Where might those copies be?
  • What might they be doing while "incarcerated"?

Yeah, fun and potentionaly dark answers might be out there depending on the answers? I believe these are called possible adventure hooks. *shrugs* Could be, could be not. Post suggestion(s) if any or just make a new thread.

*Yeah, looks like Marc and I were on that cold fusion thing. Hell, I used and hope, pray and wish that I still have my photocopies of the two original cold fusion papers. I read them too. Many times.

The Eldest and Most Credible Order of the Institutes.

Archivist (Initiate) is the first Rank and Title in the Order and its linage goes back to Volcker's Imperium. They are Charged and Sworn to keep accurate, politically neutral, psychohistorical records of the Imperiums and to protect the Repositories and Old Empires sites. They keep a fund that they disperse to latent psionics that missed the pre-screening due to poverty, Citizen or Subject status within the Imperium or other reasons of misfortune. They have both civilian and military members. Which is good since the Order is also Charged with keeping military forces for fulfillment of their duties to the Institutes, the Imperium and the Crown. The membership is fairly evenly divided among sophonts, worlds, or service with civilian side being filled with academia and functionaries of the bureaucracies (Imperial and Royal) and the military side is mainly ex-members of the Dump Defense Forces.

* Honors, Title and Rank of The Archivist of the House Rules.

This an official post within the Imperial Household and is the final source on many odd matters of etiquette. While it seems at first a peaceful task undertaken in dark, media filled rooms in the depths of the Palace by strange distinguished Imperial Scholars the history of the Imperiums has quiet of few tales kept by the very same academics where the matter was settled by duels of various sorts, some extreme matters resulting in small wars. While most people think the Moot's Office of The Register of Imperial Documents would be the ones to decide the Order of Precedence and Succession, but it is by tradition and Imperial High Law administered by The Archivist of the House Rules.

Small Starburst SETTING: 10,000 Year Contracts.

There is a class of contract in the Imperium which is held as Treaty and Trade Law within the Imperiums throughout their history and before. These are the 10,000 Year Contracts.

The 10,000 Year Contracts are enshrined in Imperial High Law and as such must be correctly, honorably, justly and truthfully administered by nobles of the rank of Count or above only. As it is not Low Law which all nobles of the rank of Viscount and below may exercise without seeking permission from a high noble, a noble of such rank must seek and obtain permission to act on the Terms of a 10,000 Year Contract.

It is their time and place in history that accounts for the very reason for such contracts existence and continuance to this day. Some circles of academia credit the Imperial Peerage with keeping things together as long as they managed during the Interregnum due to desperate attempts to keep these contracts going. They got their name because the terms agreed to when they were first written which specified in very, very clear and unambiguous terms that their "length shall be for the duration of ten thousand standard years (10,000 years) (Standard years are stipulated to consist of three hundred and sixty-five days equal to one rotational period of twenty-four hours of the Homeworld of All Humanity, Terra of the Sol system) and must be maintained as long as civilized humanity strides the stars in ships or other means and engages in regular travel and trade between the worlds of the universe in the face of all odds. It shall survive and held valid in all human courts forever more when ever and where ever humans shall meet for such length (10,000 years) or the complete and utter extinction of humanity from the universe (May it survive in another.)."

They had such long terms due to the slow speed of the ships of those days that gave them a deep time point of view where contract law was concerned and the bulk of the surviving contracts (such as the one that ties the Crown and Bibickia) would live long past generations the lives of the original signing parties. Many great and old Houses maintain their lofty place in the Imperiums on the foundations of rather cunningly worded examples of these contracts (some of which pre-date the Terran Federation, much less the full run of other human interstellar polities that have come and gone since those primitive ages). The value of such contract range from GCr 1 for notarized, psi-bonded, legal-rated copies. The actual originals range to base rated in RU to literally priceless and fortunes, fames, and Houses have risen and fallen on such document or clever forgeries.

For some reason this disorder is seen in a significant portion of the cybernetic citizens of organic origin. In rare cases it is seen in OtherLife, such as robot persons or in the most extreme cases Personalities or Limited Personalities loaded on completely non-organic hardware.

Small Starburst The Imperial Stationary

The Imperial Stationary.
(Used: formal decrees, proclamations, orders, or invitations.)

A luminescent white parchment envelope with Imperial purple edging and silkage* ribbons surmounted by a Royal blue, bio-reactive wax with the Seal of the Imperium impressed in it. The Seal of the Imperium signifies that His Majesty is acting as The Emperor. If the Seal is the Arms of Vladimir II, High Lord of Permatic then His Majesty is acting in the Royal guise. One may in some rare circumstance refuse His Royal Majesty, but one never refuses His Imperial Majesty.

You press your left thumb upon the Seal to open it. It is suggested at this time to check the individual delivering such a Sealed material has handed you the correct item or has the counter-agent handy as the result of an unauthorized person trying and failing to break a Seal is often quick, fatal and unpleasant. (Such Seals are familiar to you if you have served in the Joint Armed Forces or other service or agency that uses this authentication method for classified materials.)

The parchment and ribbons have that certain handmade quality that His Majesty (and thus the Court) has encouraged among those wealthy enough to import such novelties as hand made parchment in a digital, interstellar empire. They exchange paper calling and business cards, they wear natural fiber clothing worked by hand sometimes "from the Beast to the Suit", they hunt exotic game on far away worlds from air/rafts wielding hand armored, low tech slug throwers. Such is the life of the upper classes and its aim is not merely to show off, but to encourage interstellar trade with the lower tech societies and cultures and help bring them to the stars.
