Default Far Trader: The trailer

So, I've hinted a couple times at a fan film I'm working on. Here's a youtube link to a trailer we just finished:

Far Trader: The Trailer

We entered a prior version of this in a local competition- we didn't win, but there was lots of positive feedback.

CG was done by the esteemed Mr. Boulton

The actual series may not contain any of the content from the trailer- it was produced with just about no budget by bare amateurs. Current plans are to produce a number of web series, each series consisting of 5-10 15 minute episodes. There may not be continuity between series, but we're not quite planning that far ahead yet. We learned a lot making the trailer that we should be able to improve the look of the series considerably.

The series takes place in the TNE setting, along the trailing edge of Regency space.

Feedback and commentary is encouraged and welcome. I do, however, reserve the right to filter appropriately. I would hope people would be charitable enough to understand that the divergent nature of each group's TU also applies to the aesthetic and themes in this trailer and the subsequent series.

That said, I'm aiming for two things:
1. That it's "Traveller" enough for most fans to enjoy.
2. A film that's of a fairly decent quality.
3. Spending as little money as possible.

Some characters are unnamed at this point

It's amazing what you can do with 12 bucks at the salvation army, a hot glue gun and a can of flat black paint

The "zap" effect on the pistol seems really cheesey...

And the "We must kill out man-weapon for what's in his head" screams of a Firefly/Serenity ripoff.

Look and feel is dead on, save for the above mentioned zap effect.

Well I loved it, far better than most of the Firefly fan films going around at the moment.
Keep up the good work.

I struggled with that one a bit. It's supposed to be a gauss pistol. I brought up the subject of what a Gauss pistol muzzle report would look like at one of our gaming sessions, and it was suggested that there would be brief arc as the projectile broke the electrical field at the end of the barrel. I goofed around with some stock images for a while, then messed around with the "lightning" effect in After Effects until I got that. I basically ran out of time and had to move on rather than refine it further.

Yeah- it makes me wish I was a scriptwriter
The actual plot arc will be a little more complex than that, I just did a poor job of expressing it in the trailer. Also, we had to improv outside the script a little, which didn't help. We'll be tightening that up

Well, folks round here have been asking for this for a loooooong time so for even producing a trailer, I salute you. Also, I appreciate that you're doing it with no budget and just the things you have to hand. That, equally is to be respected.
My initial thoughts on viewing the trailer is that you need a strong visual style. At the moment it looks too 20th century. I appreciate that, again you only have 20th century weapons and clothing to hand and that it's a tough one to create costumes and props - particularly on zero budget.

Consider virtual sets. This has been used to varying degrees of success on Star Trek: Hidden Frontier. You'll need to be able to do green screen work and it requires a locked off camera, but it will enable you to cheaply produce sci-fi interiors and alien landscapes etc for zero cost.
When firing lasers, try flahing a flashlight at the actors, so that there's some light information in the physical scene to ground the digital effect more.

Finally, Andrew, I'm really impressed with the compositing the ship into the video footage - in the scene when it's landing. It's very well done. Unfortunately the ship looks like a plastic toy. I beseech you to look into surface shaders properly. You don't need insane modelling detail on thse ship for long shots like that, but the surface really needs to react to light convincingly in order to sell the effect.

I'd love to offer my services for this but I'm notoriously unreliable and busy

Looking forward to future productions,

Crow

Yeah, it is amazing how many really cool props are in reality some crap the property department threw together and painted. Still it looked dead on, totally recognized the second I saw it.

And yeah, the muzzle flash is kinda weak and the blood sprays could use some more work too.

None the less it is still cool.

So my big question is why the Regency period, not the Golden Age?

Very Cool!
I reposted the link on my facebook page.

Anyone doing fan-films should have a look at Star Wreck. That's a fan-film well done.

Someone on the MGP forum suggested playing up ruins and Virus to stress the TNE setting. But really, all you need is a deserted city for it.

Oh, and a crazy guy with a head computer. A head computer that's been INFECTED BY VIRUS!!! "You don't know what's in my head man!!! You don't know what got into my head!"

Oh, and if you want any of us other Traveller fans to make cameos (cameos with speaking parts) I'd be willing.
