So... my home group just tried the Unearthed Arcana Mass Combat rules.

So... the forces
Player Side
  • 200 commoners (20 stands) - uprgaded to better armor (AC12) and a scimitar.
  • 50 knights (5 stands)
  • 20 skirmishers (spy) (2 stands)
  • 50 veterans (5 stands)
  • 100 Castle Guards (10 stands)
  • 1 Mage
  • 1 noble
  • 1 veteran with 20 Cha and +2 dex
Plus the PC's.
1/2E Druid 6, DB fighter-EK 6, Ti War (Bk, OO) 6, Ha Ro-Th 6, Elf Monk-5, Elf Ro-Assn 5

PC units were
  • Veterans mixed with commoners x2. Big units, too.
  • knights alone.
  • Skirmishers with 2x veterans each in 2 skirmisher units.
  • One mixed guards and commoners.

NPC side: 82 Cambions with poison laden musket balls. 2 leaders, total 2 units of 4 stands plus 2 solos.

Open field battle. One of the most interesting things was that, since grapple is a standard melee attack, it's doable. So two stands of cambions were hauled to the ground, and beaten soundly, by commoners. Since they can't hit the AC 18 cambions effectively, but the stand a better chance vs their strength, and being grappled makes them easier to hit....

3 turns took 4 hours of play. We're halfway through, I think. Thus far, 3 cambion stands are under 5 (of 82) HP left, and only one isn't damaged. 4 stands of friendlies are down - one guards, 3 commoners. And it's turned into a big brawl in the middle.

It's slow, but it would have been a LOT slower with standard rules.

Note that the UABS seems to imply initiative every turn.

It scales to 10-man stands, 1 man solos, 20' squares, 120' standard move, 1 minute turns, and fireballs doing mucho blammo.

The biggest lack - no preworked graphics of the various AoE's - because some now have half-damage zones on them.

It's definitely looking like the cambions are going to fall.

the question being, how pyrrhic is the victory.
Oh, and the wizard added a group of bears by summoning. 1 stand. (she had to get at least 5 to count.)

We finish it next week.
